Final Jeopardy: Animals
The Final Jeopardy question (5/23/2012) in the category “Animals” was:
A 2005 study reported that this animal named for an island has, pound-for-pound, the most powerful bite of any mammal.
Joel Pool returns today with his 2-day total is $48,400. His competition today are these two contestants: Jody Clark, from Garretson, SD; and Barb Hougas, originally from Denison, IA.
Jody found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “It’s Opening Night on Broadway.” He was in the lead with $3,600, $1,000 more than Barb and Joel who were tied. He bet $1,000 and he was RIGHT.
“The Wiz” opened on January 5, 1975; this other Oz-set musical on October 30, 2003. show
Jody finished in the lead with $7,000. Barb was second with $3,000 and Joel was last with $2,800.
Joel found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “Company Names.” He was in second place now with $3,600, $3,800 less than Jody. He bet $1,800 and he was RIGHT.
August Horch named his car company after translating Horch, which means “Hark!” or “Hear”, into Latin. show
Jody found the last Daily Double in the next to last clue. The category was “A Touch of Robert Frost in the Air.” He was in the lead with $15,000, $4,400 more than Joel in second place. He bet $4,000, guessed it was “Fences,” and he was WRONG. Just a hunch, but we suspect he bet that much because “The Road Not Taken,” Frost’s most well-known poem hadn’t come up yet, even though Joel gave a version of the title as an incorrect answer to another clue.
It’s the Robert Frost poem that says “Good fences make good neighbors.” show
Jody finished in the lead with $11,000. Joel was next with $10,600 and Barb was last with $8,200.
Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
WHAT IS THE TASMANIAN DEVIL?
“Tasmanian devils have a notoriously cantankerous disposition and will fly into a maniacal rage when threatened by a predator, fighting for a mate, or defending a meal. Early European settlers dubbed it a “devil” after witnessing such displays, which include teeth-baring, lunging, and an array of spine-chilling guttural growls.” (National Geographic)
Barb wrote down “the Komodo dragon.” She lost her $3,000 bet and finished with $5,200.
Alex must have meant it wasn’t a bad guess because of the island part. According to National Geographic, the world’s largest lizard’s bite is weaker than a house cat’s!
Joel is becoming famous for leaving out the verb in his Final Jeopardy answers., but he still got it right and doubled his score to $21,200.
Jody also wrote down the Komodo dragon. He bet $10,100 so he ended up with $900.
Joel’s 3-day score is $69,600. Go, Joel!
