Final Jeopardy: 18th Century Authors (11-8-11)

The Final Jeopardy question (11/8/2011) in the category “18th Century Authors” was:

In a poem he named himself Cadenus, an anagram of Decanus, or “Dean”.

Three more Jeopardy champs competed today: Christopher Short from Indiana, Justin Sausville from Maryland; and Mark Runsvold from Idaho.

Christopher got the very last clue in the Jeopardy! round (in “Yes-vember”) which was also the Daily Double. At this point, Mark was in the lead with $6,200. Justin had $5,600 and Christopher was last with $2,600. He risked $1,500 and thought it was Trenton. That was WRONG and, consequently, he ended up with $1,100.

In Double Jeopardy, Justin got the first Daily Double (“King of Queen”). He bet $2,200 of the $6,800 he had at this point. He had to supply the name of the mate of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, formerly Duchess of York. He was off by one George so he was WRONG.

Then Justin got the second Daily Double in “Turtles”. This time he bet $1,400 and he was RIGHT.

Justin finished first with $15,200; Mark was next with $12,200; and Christopher was last with $5,900.

Only Justin looked like he was sure he knew the Final Jeopardy answer. He did but someone else got it right, too.

WHO IS JONATHAN SWIFT?

“That was a toughie,” Alex said. Well, it was for us and we never would have got it because we thought the category was 19th century authors (had to go back and change the title and all that). If only we read it right, it wasn’t that tough. The “Gulliver’s Travels” author was the Dean of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin from 1713 until his death in 1745.

Christopher bet his whole $5,900, but wrote down Tennyson, so he ended up with zero. Maybe he thought it said 19th century, too. Mark wrote down Swift and bet $11,800 giving him $24,000. Justin bet $3,399 bringing his total to $18,599. Instead of winning, that gave him the lead Wild Card spot (even if it was announced last).

The 5 winners entering the semi-finals tomorrow are: Mark Runsvold, Buddy Wright, Joon Pahk, Roger Craig and Tom Nissley. Great job, guys!

After Justin with that $18,599, Jay Rhee had the second highest score ($16,401), Erin McLean was next with $16,603 and Kara Spak got that last spot with her $6,012 score.
