At the rate the teenagers talk about sex in The Secret Life of the American Teenager, you would think there’d be a lot of unwed mothers at Ulysses S. Grant High School in the fictional town of Valley Glen. But Amy Juergens didn’t go to band camp with plans to seduce Ricky Underwood. He irresponsibly seduced the unprepared 15-year-old and continued to indulge in his sex addiction with his main girlfriend, Adrian, and every other girl he could get his hands on in school even after their son, John was born.

Divorced parents, George and Anne Juergens already had their hands full with their two teenage daughters, Amy and Ashley. Amy wanted to keep her baby. Ashley was resentful that Amy’s pregnancy turned their household on its ear. George and Anne decided to give their marriage another try and this resulted in Anne becoming pregnant. So Anne gave birth to Robie, an uncle who is younger than his own nephew, John.

Ben Boykewich married Amy when Ricky wouldn’t take responsibility for his son, John, but their marriage was annulled. He still was there for Amy, but Amy really wanted Ricky. Ricky eventually realized that he wanted a real family more than anything in the world and that he could change if he worked at it. Hurt and furious over losing Ricky to Amy, Adrian seduced Ben in an effort to even the score. She became pregnant and married Ben, but they tragically lost their baby.
