Jesse Jackson, Jr. and Wife, Sandra, Both Get Jail Time
Former congressman, Jesse Jackson, Jr. was sentenced to 30 months in prison on Wednesday, August 14, for spending $750,000 of campaign funds on living it up, the NY Times reports. His wife, Sandra, got 12 months for failing to report $580,000 in income on their tax returns.
Judge Amy Berman Jackson disregarded explanations from Jesse Jackson, Jr.’s lawyers, attempting to frame the whole thing as poor judgment brought on by the bipolar illness his client suffers from. The judge noted that there are often “gray areas” in campaign finance issues, but what went on with the Jacksons wasn’t cloudy in the least — it was plain as day: “The inescapable fact is that you and Sandra Jackson used campaign funds to sustain a lifestyle that you cannot afford,” Judge Jackson said.
She did grant the couples request that they be allowed to serve their sentences one at a time, so that their children, ages 9 and 13, will not be deprived of both parents simultaneously, but the judge rejected a request to sentence Sandra, a former Chicago alderwoman, to probation and community service as her absence would cause her children psychological distress. “The court did not put your children in this position. The government did not put your children in this position,” the judge emphasized.
Jesse Jackson, Jr. must report to prison on or after November 1. He was also sentenced to 3 years of supervised release, and he is not eligible for parole. But his sentence could be reduced by several months for good behavior or if he receives treatment for his bipolar disorder. Additionally, he must pay back the campaign money to the government.
Sandra Jackson, who pleaded guilty to one felony count of filing false tax returns, must also pay $22,000 in restitution and is subject to one year of supervised release.
