Final Jeopardy: Women Authors (1-12-12)

The Final Jeopardy question (1/12/2012) in the category “Women Authors” was:

1 of 2 American women authors nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1938.

4-time champ Dan McShane was back once again today. Our two new players hoping to break his winning streak are: Stephanie Walker from Richmond Heights, OH and Brandon Lilly from Mount Ephraim, NJ.

Stephanie found the Daily Double in the Jeopardy! round in “Literary Character Personal Trainer.” She had $3,200, $2,200 more than Brandon and $1,000 less than Dan. She bet $1,600. She was RIGHT, and took over the lead.

“OK, Mr. “Christmas Carol” ghost! Time to use that chain you ‘forged in life’, ‘link by link’ for resistance work.” show

Dan got it back on the very next clue but Stephanie not only got it back again, she finished in the lead with $7,200 (the exact same amount Dan had at the end of yesterday’s first round). Dan was second with $4,800 and Brandon was last with $1,800.

In Double Jeopardy, Stephanie got the first Daily Double in “History.” She now had $10,000, $400 less than Dan. She struggled over her bet but decided on $3,000. She was RIGHT again and got in the lead again.

In 1720, Victor Amadeus II of Savoy gave Sicily to Austria in exchange for this other large island. show

Random observation: Every time someone from New Jersey gets on Jeopardy!, a contestant NOT from New Jersey manages to buzz in on clues like this: “We’ll gamble you know this NJ city boasts a 4.5-mile-long boardwalk that continues on into Ventnor City.” The last time that happened the answer was “Newark.”

Brandon didn’t get that NJ one but he did get the last Daily Double in “USA.” He had $8,200 and decided to go with the Daily Double “bet du jour” — $3,000. He was RIGHT.

From 1863 to 1865, this Northern Louisiana city served as the Confederate state capital. show

Dan finished in the lead with $18,000 but it was no runaway today. Stephanie’s $13,400 and Brandon’s $11,200 put them in excellent positions if Dan didn’t get Final Jeopardy right.

Three correct Daily Doubles today but only ONE contestant got the Final Jeopardy question right.

WHO IS PEARL S. BUCK or MARGARET MITCHELL?

“The Nobel Prize in Literature 1938 was awarded to Pearl Buck ‘for her rich and truly epic descriptions of peasant life in China and for her biographical masterpieces’.” Nobel Prize.org.

“GWTW was an overnight international bestseller when published 75 years ago, and one million copies sold in the first six months. The book won the Pulitzer Prize and was nominated for the Nobel Prize.” Cynthia’s Communique

Brandon was the one who got it right by picking Margaret Mitchell. He bet $8,000 bringing his score to $19,200.

Stephanie picked Harper Lee (“To Kill a Mockingbird”) but that was published in 1960. She bet $13,000, leaving her with $400.

Dan wrote down Welty, meaning Eudora Welty, and his bet was $8,801. Welty was nominated for the Nobel prize many times, but in 1938, she was just starting out, writing short stories. He ended up in second place with $9,999.

And that’s what Dan gets for swiping that Atlantic City clue.

Brandon will be back tomorrow to try to win some more and become a 2-day champion.
