Final Jeopardy: 2011 Musicmakers (6-20-12)
The Final Jeopardy question (6/20/2012) in the category “2011 Musicmakers” was:
According to Billboard, the Top 2 music artists of 2011 were these single-named singers, neither born in the U.S.
David Menchaca is now a 4-day champ with total winnings of $91,503. Oh, David, we’re rooting for you to get over 100 grand, but we don’t think these two new players are: Austin Baird, from Provo, UT and Marjorie Parker, from Austin, TX.
David found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double before the first commercial break in “Classical Music.” He was in the lead with $2,600, $1,600 more than Marjorie in second place. Even though David studied classical music, he modestly bet $1,000 and he was RIGHT.
In 1696, John Blow, a great British composer of this musical era, wrote an ode on the death of another, Henry Purcell. show
David finished in the lead with $6,800. Marjorie was second with $2,200 and Austin was last with $2,600.
David found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “Zeus Your Daddy.” He still had the lead, only now with $10,800, $2,600 more than Austin who had moved into second place in a big way. He bet $2,500 and he was RIGHT.
Honey, it’s twins! These 2 guys were often called the Dioscuri, meaning “The sons of Zeus” (but one may have had another dad). show
Marjorie found the last Daily Double in “First Lady Michelle Obama,” which was not about the First Lady, but she was reading the clues. Marjorie was in third place with $1,600, $19,300 behind David. She bet it all and got Martin Luther King but couldn’t think of what the speech is called and referred to the one “on the Washington Monument.” That was not acceptable so it was WRONG.
Speaking on opening night of the 2008 Democratic convention, I noted that our meeting marked the 88th anniversary of Women’s Suffrage & the 45th of this immortal & profoundly American speech. show
David finished in the lead with a runaway $23,300. Austin was next with $11,000. Sadly, Marjorie had zero and could not play Final Jeopardy!
BOTH contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
Well, that was purty easy and we’re sure you got it, too. Rihanna was born as Robyn Rihanna Fenty in Saint Michael, Barbados, on February 20, 1988 and Adele Laurie Blue Adkins was born in Tottenham, London, England, on May 5, 1988.
Austin bet $5,500 and finished with $16,500.
David only bet $700, and who can blame him? He finished with $24,000. He’s over that $100 grand mark today, with a 5-day total of $115,503. Congratulations, David!
Notable Clue: None of the contestants got the answer to the $400 clue in “A Bit of Brit Lit,” although they all tried: “She dedicated “Jane Eyre” to fellow author William Makepeace Thackerary. Austin said “Austen.” Majorie said “Elizabeth Bronte.” David said “Emily Bronte.” Strange indeed. Wasn’t just Bronte acceptable?
