Final Jeopardy: Historical Facts & Figures (3-20-12)

The Final Jeopardy question (3/20/2012) in the category “Historical Facts & Figures” was:

This site was active from 1892 to 1954; it’s busiest day was April 17, 1907 when 11,747 were processed.”

Our new champ today is Alex Wright, who won yesterday’s game with a total of $25,600. He can add to that today if he can defeat these two new players: Vince Gatton from New York, NY, and Melanie Spratford from Chicago, IL.

Vince found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “I’m the King of the World.” Just like yesterday, it was the second to last clue on the board. Vince was in last place with $800. Alex had $7,200 and Melanie had $4,400. Vince chose to only bet what he had, even though he could have risked $1,000. Vince guessed Germany and that was WRONG.

Charles I, who died in 1922, was the last Emperor of Austria & as Charles IV, the last king of this country. show

So he lost all his money. Then nobody had a clue who the last king of Egypt was, so Alex and Hannah remained at $7,200 and $4,400 respectively, and Vince remained at zero.

Melanie found the first Daily Double In Double Jeopardy! in the category “Best Sellers.” She had $4,800, $2,400 less than Alex’s lead. She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.

Seth Grahame-Smith revealed an unknown aspect of the Civil War in the horror-history hybrid call him: ‘Vampire Hunter.’ show

Melanie found the second Double Jeopardy! in “Music Terms.” At $7,600, she now had a $400 lead over Alex courtesy of some bad guessing on his part. She chose to bet $1,600 and she was RIGHT.

This specific term refers to one who writes the text of an opera. show

Melanie finished first with $10,000, Alex was next with $9,600 and Vince, although still last, had caught up admirably. He had $8,000 going into Final Jeopardy!.

As fully expected, ALL of the players got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS ELLIS ISLAND?

“You’ll be helped a great deal, of course, in this clue if you knew what the 11,747 referred to. We’re not talking about apples or peaches here,” Alex informed the players for no other reason, we’re sure, than being Canadian or he just wanted to read the number off the card. Hoo boy.

There are many sites with interesting info on Ellis Island. Of course, it has its very own site: The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc., where you can search for your ancestors. If it’s hard because of the name changing thing, there’s also a book If Your Name Was Changed At Ellis Island.

There’s also an interesting Ellis Island article on Sydaby.Eget.net that says: “To most, Ellis Island was an Isle of Hope, a brief stopping point on the way to a better life. To an unfortunate few, it became an Isle of Tears, a place of detention and possible rejection.”

Vince bet his $7,800 and finished with $15,800.

Alex bet $7,000 and finished with $16,600.

Melanie bet $8,801, enough to win the game with $19,201, and the one-day champ trend continues.

Tune in tomorrow to see if Melanie can end it.
