Final Jeopardy: Ancient Landmarks

The Final Jeopardy question (5/8/2012) in the category “Ancient Landmarks” was:

It’s believed that its nose was about 3 feet wide when it was first constructed around 2500 B.C..

It’s Day 2 of the Teen Tournament semi-finals, and we are about to get our second finalist. Will it be: Evan Eschliman, a sophomore from Olathe, KS; Anshika Niraj, a sophomore from Beachwood, OH, or Elyse Mancuso, a junior from Omaha, NE.

Evan found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in the category “Washington Today.” He was in the lead with $5,800, $1,800 more than Elyse who had $800 more than Anshika. He bet $2,600 and he was RIGHT.

She’s the mother of 5, grandmother of 9 & minority leader of 192 in the house of representatives. show

Now right after that, they interrupted regular programming with breaking news so we didn’t get to see the scores at the end of the round. When they came back, Double Jeopardy! was in progress. Evan had $11,000; Elyse had $10,600 and Anshika had $6,800, and we did get to see both Daily Doubles.

Elyse found the first Daily Double in the Double Jeopardy! round in the category “Who Wrote the Line.” She was in second place with $11,400, $3,200 less than Evan who was in the lead. Elyse bet $3,000 with that same very serious face she was sporting for most of the game, but when she saw the clue, a bright smile appeared. She was RIGHT.

“Somewhere in LaMancha, in a place whose name I do not care to remember, a gentleman lived not long ago.” show

Anshika found the last Daily Double in “African Geography.” She was in last place with $6,400, $10,400 less than Elyse who was now in the lead. She risked $2,000 but she got her sea colors mixed up and said it was the Black Sea. That was WRONG.

Port cities on this sea include Massawa in Eritrea & Hurghada in Egypt. show

Elyse finished in the lead with $20,800. Evan was next with a very close $19,800 and Anshika was last with $5,600.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE GREAT SPHINX OF GIZA?

“The commonly used name Sphinx was given to it in classical antiquity, about 2000 years after the accepted date of its construction, by reference to a Greek mythological beast with a lion’s body, a woman’s head and the wings of an eagle (although, like most Egyptian sphinxes, the Great Sphinx has a man’s head and no wings). The English word sphinx comes from the ancient Greek Σφίγξ (transliterated: sphinx), apparently from the verb σφίγγω (transliterated: sphingo / English: to squeeze), after the Greek sphinx who strangled anyone who failed to answer her riddle.” (wikipedia)

Anshika doubled her score to finish with $11,200.

Evan bet it all, too, and finished with $39,600.

Failing to get a bead on Elyse, Alex Trebek commented on her poker face. That made her break out in another smile. She bet $20,000 and won the finalist spot with a $40,800 total and kept smiling.

Now we’ve got two girls in the finals. Rose Schaefer is the only girl in tomorrow’s game. Tune in tomorrow to see if she makes it an all-girl final.
