Final Jeopardy: People in British History (12-18-12)

The Final Jeopardy question (12/18/2012) in the category “People in British History” was:

In 1805 the second in command to this hero said “I wish (he) would stop signaling. We all know what we have to do.”

New champ Susan Jann is back after winning $22,800 yesterday. Today she is up against these two fellows: Joe Emison , from Asheville, NC and  Kevin Moser, from Fort Wright, KY.

Joe found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Sports Terms” before the first commercial break. He was in the lead with $1,600, $200 ahead of Susan in second place. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

This term for a golf course is actually a Scottish word for sandy coastal land. show

Susan finished in the lead with $6,600. Joe was second with $2,800 and Kevin was last with $400.

Susan found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “Grammar.” She had a runaway lead with $18,600, $10,600 more than Joe in second place. She decided to keep that runaway lead, no matter what, and only bet $2,000. She thought the answer was “a conjunction” but that was WRONG.

In English, exactly 3 words with a total of 6 letters, represent this part of speech. show

Susan found the last Daily Double in “The 12th Century.” She had that same $18,600 as before, now $10,200 more than Joe in second place. She bet $1,500, came up with Catherine of Aragon, Henry VIII’s first (Spanish) wife, so that was WRONG.

This Queen of France was divorced from Louis VII in March 1152 & married Henry Plantagenet 2 months later. show

Susan finished in the lead with $17,100, no longer a runaway because Kevin was now in second place with $9,200. Joe was in third place with $8,400.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS HORATIO NELSON?

Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood evidently got annoyed at his good friend, Admiral Nelson, for stating what was, to him, the obvious. At the Battle of Trafalgar, Nelson pronounced “England expects that every man will do his duty.” We loved how Alex mentioned Nelson’s statement — as if it should be common knowledge, but if it was, the question should have been “He said England expects” etc. They certainly didn’t expect anyone to know who did the wishing. Indeed, Collingwood is referred to in a BBC article as a Forgotten Hero.

Joe bet it all so he finished with $16,800.

Kevin bet $9,000, finishing with $18,200.

Susan bet $2,500, enough to win the game with $19,600 and remain champ. Her 2-day total is an impressive $42,400.
