Final Jeopardy: Top of the Pop Charts (10-20-11)

The Final Jeopardy question (10/20/2011), in the category Top of the Pop Charts, was:

“In 1978, he replaced his brothers at No. 1, who then replaced him; one of the brothers was a writer on all 3 songs

New champion Lloyd Caesar of Watervliet, NY returned today to face two brand new challengers: Jay Peterson from Howell, NJ and Jessie Christenson from Orem, Utah. “The J’s have arrived,” Alex pronounced.

The Daily Double in the Jeopardy round was in the category Sports and Civil Rights (This clause in a law signed June 23, 1972 changed women’s college athletics forever). It went to Jay who was in second place. He wanted to make it a true Daily Double and he knew the answer, putting him in the lead with $4,000. It looked like he was going to keep right on going, but Jessie managed to get a few licks in.

Jay ended the round with $8,000. Jessie had $4,400 and Lloyd, who was pretty quiet till about the end of the round, was close behind with $4,200.

Jay also got the first Daily Double in Double Jeopardy and picked up an extra $2,000 when he got it right. (Historic Names: In 1514 this Spanish explorer was made military governor of Bimini & Florida).

Jessie was catching up to him pretty good but then she got the second Daily Double and just could not think of the answer. (Really Hurt: Rogaine won’t repair this stress-induced pain also called a capillary fracture.) That $3,800 loss set her back a bit.

Jessie went into Final Jeopardy in last place with $11,000. Lloyd was in second place with $12,000 and Jay had a decent lead with $16,400.

Only Jessie got Final Jeopardy wrong, picking Michael Jackson. Lloyd and Jay both got the right singer, the younger brother of Bee Gees, Barry, Maurice and Robin Gibb.

“WHO IS ANDY GIBB?”

“(Love Is) Thicker Than Water” … broke in early 1978 during the time the Bee Gees’ contributions to the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack were dominating the world charts. In the US it replaced “Stayin’ Alive” at the top of the charts, and then was surpassed by “Night Fever” when it reached number one in mid-March. (Andy Gibb: Wikipedia) Brother, Barry was the songwriter referred to. In 1978, he became the only songwriter to have 4 consecutive number one hits in the USA: “Stayin’ Alive”, “Love Is Thicker Than Water”, “Night Fever” and “If I Can’t Have You.”

Lloyd bet $12,599 giving him a total of $25,199, but Jay was prepared even if Lloyd bet that other dollar. Jay bet $8,801, making him the new champion by a $2 lead with $25,201.

Lloyd got to take home his $22,359 winnings from yesterday — they never did say anything about that $600 question from yesterday — plus he got $2,000 for finishing second today.

Jay will be back tomorrow and we are back to Jeopardy champions with wins in the $20,000 range.
