Final Jeopardy: The 20th Century (10-19-11)

The Final Jeopardy question (10/19/2011), in the category The 20th Century, was:

In the 1940s, Franklin Roosevelt coined this term in reference to all the countries allied against the Axis powers.

After their crazy Tuesday tie, Lanny Timan and Liz Greenwood returned on Wednesday to see if one of them could continue as the current Jeopardy champion. Maybe and maybe not, if their new challenger, Lloyd Caesar, is able to beat the pants off both of them.

Alex noted that this season’s Jeopardy winners, up until yesterday, were averaging over $20,000 per win. “Yesterday, we had co-champions — two champions — for the first time this year and between them, they totaled $3,198.”

Lanny was storming through the Biology category at the start of the Jeopardy round, until Liz got her buzzer to work. Nobody missed a clue until Liz got the Daily Double (It remained a separate colony for most of its 71 years until it was absorbed by Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1691). She got the first part right but said Plantation instead of Colony. That cost her $1,200.

Did anyone else notice that Lloyd failed to phrase his answer to “Rocka ___ Goat” in the form of a question? This was a $600 clue.

Liz ended this round in the lead with $7,200. Lanny had $3,000 and Lloyd was in third place with $2,200.

Lloyd again failed to phrase his answer in the form of a question when completing the Robert Browning line from Pippa’s Song: “God’s in his heaven–/All’s” He was caught out there on this one and Liz got it by adding “What is” to “right with the world.”

Lloyd got both Daily Doubles in Double Jeopardy and got into the lead. ($2,000: Born in 1225, this Italian is the patron saint of Catholic schools, universities & colleges; and $4,000 The full title of a Dickens novel is “The Posthumous Papers of” this club).

Then Liz swept through most of Rock and Roll Calendar so she went into Final Jeopardy in the lead with $20,400. Lloyd was a close second with $19,800 and Lanny trailed them both with a mere $8,600.

The two co-champions blew Final Jeopardy, and although Lloyd didn’t exactly beat the pants off anyone, he did get the answer right and won the game.

“WHAT IS THE UNITED NATIONS?”

Franklin D. Roosevelt coined the phrase “United Nations” on January 1st, 1942 when making reference to the 26 Allied nations which were fighting against the Axis powers.

Lloyd obviously figured his best shot was a small bet in hopes that Liz would be wrong. Even if Lanny was right and bet it all, she didn’t have enough to catch him. All he bet was $2,559.

Lanny answered “Allied Powers” and bet $7,599 leaving her with $1,001.

Liz was writing down “good guys” when she just gave up and left the guys off. She bet $19,200 bringing her down to $1,200 and second place.

Lanny took her two-day total of $17,600 home, plus an extra grand. Liz took her $1,599 home with two grand extra and Lloyd will be back tomorrow to try to add to his $22,359 winnings or $21,759, as the case may be. If the judges look over the game and dock him that $600, he still would have won.

Note to Greg — Liz won an additional $2,000 today for finishing second and Lanny won an additional $1,000 for finishing third. Plus they got to keep their prior winnings. Second and third place cash prizes have been around since May of 2002.

“Losing contestants initially got parting gifts, but starting on May 16, 2002, second and third place respectively won a flat $2,000 and $1,000 …” (see TV Tropes, Complacent Gaming)
