Final Jeopardy: Ancient Weights & Measures (1-6-12)

The Final Jeopardy question (1/6/2012) in the category “Ancient Weights & Measures” was:

The Hebrew word for this bibilical unit of measurement is Ammah, aptly meaning “elbow” or “forearm”

Are you rooting for 6-day champion Dave Leach to prevail again today and return on Monday? We know at least two people who are not: Dan McShane from West Islip, NY. and Molly Dahlberg from Baton Rouge, LA.

Future Jeopardy! hopefuls should take note of Dave’s mistake in the “I Want My ‘Baby’ Back, ‘Baby’ Back” category. Dave has shown a cautious tendency to give only the last name of a person they are looking for, to negate any chance of giving a wrong first name. We guess Alex didn’t give another player a shot at it because he had to tell why it was wrong. The “Baby Face” part of “Baby Face Nelson” was required because the category had quotes around ‘Baby.’ Baby Face was born Lester Joseph Gillis. George Nelson was an alias.

Dave found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “New Mexico:” He had $4,600. He bet $2,300. He came up with “the Gadsden Treaty but that was WRONG.

Most of what is now New Mexico was ceded to the U.S. in 1848 through this treaty that ended the Mexican War. show

Dan was in the lead with $5,800 by the end of the round, Molly was second with $4,000 and Dave was pulling up the rear with $2,300.

In Double Jeopardy, Dan found the first Daily Double in “On a First Name Basis.” He had today’s runaway in the works with $12,600 at this point. Dave had $5,500 and Amy had $2,400. Dan thought it was Andrew but that was WRONG.

Paul McCartney’s real first name: he shares it with 2 apostles. show

Dave got the very last clue which was the second Daily Double in “Write Now.” He had $11,900. He bet $2,500. “Playing for a tie again, are we?” Alex observed. He thought it was McMurtry. That was WRONG.

For a magazine story, this author of westerns once did his day’s writing on a traffic island on Sunset Blvd. show

Dan played a great game today and went into Final Jeopardy with $14,400. Dave was next with $9,400 and Amy ended up last with $6,800.

TWO of the contestants got the right Final Jeopardy answer.

WHAT IS A CUBIT?

“The cubit is a traditional unit of length, based on the length of the forearm. Cubits of various lengths were employed in many parts of the world in Antiquity, in the Middle Ages and into Early Modern Times.” (wikipedia). Wikipedia spells the “ammah” measurement as “amah” in its Biblical and Talmudic units article.

Molly didn’t venture a guess but bet $6,000. That left her with $800.

Dave got it right. He bet $5,001 ending up with $14,401.

Dan also got it right, He bet $4,401 and won the game.

Three wrong Daily Doubles today, and it is a little ironic that Dave had a correct Final Jeopardy on the day he got spanked. But he will be taking home an extra $2,000 for second place along with his $98,054 winnings.

Dan will be back on Monday to try to add to his winning total of $18,801.
