Final Jeopardy: Comic Books (2-8-12)

The Final Jeopardy question (2/8/2012) in the category “Comic Books” was:

An inspiration for this character introduced in 1929 was 15-year-old Palle Huld’s 1928 44-day voyage around the world.

The College Championship tournament finals began today with these three finalists up at bat first: Monica Thieu, (Univ. of North Texas), who won the last wild card spot yesterday, Tyler Benedict (Columbia University) and Weston Mangin (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo), who scored second highest of the 5 semi-finalists.

Alex informed us that whoever wins today comes back to play in the finals and is guaranteed at least $25,000. Today’s “losers” still win $10,000 a piece, a tidy consolation.

Tyler found the Daily Double in the Jeopardy! round in the category “College M” with the M in quotations. He was in the lead with $7,400, $2,000 more than Weston. He chose to bet $2,500 and there went his lead because he said “Marlboro College” and that was WRONG.

Weston finished in the lead with $5,800. Tyler was next with $5,700 and Monica was last with $2,000.

In Double Jeopardy, Monica found the first Daily Double in the category she was already doing quite well in — “Yay, Physics!” It was a video Daily Double featuring Jimmy with a little remote control spaceman flying around. Monica had $6,400, $2,900 less than Tyler’s lead, and Alex reminded her that her chance to take the lead was at hand. She bet $3,000 and was RIGHT. She now was in the lead with $100 more than Tyler.

Weston promptly took the lead away from both of them by providing all of the correct questions, except the last one, in the category “On Cable.”

Tyler got the last Daily Double in “The 21st Century.” He had $12,500, $1,300 less than Weston. He made a conservative $1,500 bet and he was RIGHT.

Just makes you wish you made a bigger bet when it’s that easy.

Weston finished in the lead, going into Final Jeopardy with $17,000. Tyler was next with $15,600 and Monica was in third place with $12,200.

How did you like that “Roget’s Meets Bartlett’s” category? We didn’t and we know Tyler didn’t either, getting a few bad breaks in it.

Two out of three correct Daily Doubles today, but the spell is broken– only ONE player got Final Jeopardy right today.

WHO IS TINTIN?

“Tintin debuted in Le Petit Vingtième on 10 January 1929. He was largely based on an earlier character created by Hergé, a chubby boy-scout named Totor…. Tintin is a young reporter who is drawn to dangerous international intrigues in which his quick thinking, bravery and chronic good luck save the day.” (wikipedia).

If case you’re interested in who Palle Huld was, he was a Danish teen who entered a contest in honor of Jules Verne, where teen boys had to circumnavigate the globe alone in 46 days. Palle did it in 44, won the contest and later wrote a book about it. He also became an actor and made 40 films between 1933 and 2000. He passed away at the age of 98 in Copenhagen in 2010.

Monica had a markedly smug look on her face during the Final Jeopardy music and with good reason. She knew the answer and bet $12,000. She finished with $24,200.

Tyler had a totally puzzled look on his face during the music. He wrote down “Who is Steve Canyon” on a $1,500 bet and finished with $14,100. (Steve Canyon first appeared on the comic strip landscape in 1947).

Weston also looked like he didn’t know it during the music, and he didn’t. He wrote down “The Silver Surfer” (first appeared in the Fantastic Four in 1966). He bet $6,000 and finished with $11,000.

Wild game and Monica is the one guaranteed to win at least $25,000, or more, particularly if they have a Physics Final Jeopardy in her next match!
