Secret Life: To Be Recap

ABC Family’s episode “It’s Not Over Til It’s Over,” where Ben and Adrian get married, was immediately followed up with “To Be.”

Adrian is having sleeping problems and it’s very early in the morning but Ben makes his new bride breakfast. Annoyingly, they call each other “Husband” and “Wife” throughout the entire episode but fortunately, they’re not even in it that much At school, the guidance counselor has put up a Congratulations banner for Badrian and is getting chewed out by her superiors who complain it’s like rewarding them for doing something they weren’t supposed to be doing in the first place. Amy happens upon the scene and they realize their conversation is offensive to her. Amy is her usually snippy self who thinks it’s all about her.

Madison calls a girls bathroom meeting to spill that she and Jack had sex. It was emotional, she says, so emotional Jack cried actual tears and kept saying “I love you.” Amy and Lauren can’t shed any light on that. Jack tells his coach that he really meant to break up with Madison. He describes their relationship as a football game. “I should have called off the game at half-time.” Now he’s stuck with Madison, but the coach tells him he’s not married to her and they don’t have children so he’s not stuck with her. Little does Jack know that Madison is so turned off by his crying jag , she wants to break up with him. When Amy finds out that they had sex at Ricky’s apartment, she’s floored. Ricky tells Jack to never ask him again to use his place after Jack shares his sorry tale.

Grace supplies the rice to shower Ben and Adrian with upon their arrival. Adrian is thrilled with the attention. Ben and school janitor aren’t.

Leo finds out at work that Betty’s mom has “brightened” and his chauffeur, Mike, is having a grand time with Betty’s sisters. He also finds out that George didn’t miss hitting on Leo’s secretary, Camille, at the wedding. Leo forbids her to date George, saying it’s company policy that she can’t go out with anyone who knows him. Camille says it’s not company policy. “Well, it is now,” Leo says, wondering what is wrong with people. Very funny, coming from a guy who married a known prostitute.

Jack’a continued quest for advice on Madison now extends to Grace’s boyfriend, Grant, who is weirded out by this turn of events. Amy confronts Ricky about the Jack/Madison hookup and demands that he get a new bed. She’s not about to have sex with Ricky in the bed of where Jack slept with Madison, he slept with Adrian and countless other sex partners. Ricky doesn’t suggest changing the sheets, but he does act like it’s ridiculous, asking if he should change the chairs and sofa too. Yeah, and probably the chandeliers if they were all swinging from them  Nora takes Amy’s side over the “icky” bed. Nora also advises him to stop begging Amy for sex.

Grace isn’t bowled over by the idea of Grant and Jack being friends. She doesn’t want to be friends with Jack so she doesn’t think Grant should. She is even more dismayed to find out that Grant is still friends with his ex, Angie. Jack really doesn’t know when to shut his mouth because when he talks to Madison, she tells him that the sex isn’t what she expected and she didn’t think he was really into it and it seems like she will break up with him, so he’s been racking everyone else’s brains for nothing. Jack tells her how he was going to break up with her before they had sex and he’s sorry and feels like he ruined their relationship. Jack wants a relationship, but a sexless one and Madison is okay with that.

Grace’s mom, Kathleen, spots George in a restaurant where George was apparently stood up by Camille. Kathleen’s husband is supposed to be coming back from his Zimbabwe mission next week, but she admits that she’s not happy she remarried. She asks him to be honest about whether he is sorry he and Anne got divorced. George says he’s not sorry. Where George is going to land is getting confusing.

Ricky goes to Amy’s house and pops into her bedroom while she has her green facial mask on. He wants to invite her out on a real date and a night out including a nice hotel. He thinks spending time together in neutral territory will help them, but there’s no pressure to have sex and he is still going to get a new bed. Amy brightens. It must be exactly what she hoped for because she can even see that being the night they do it.

As the episode ends, Adrian is having another sleepless night and just has a feeling something isn’t right, even though she was at the doctor’s earlier and everything seemed fine.

We’re not going to go into what the coming attraction showed. Upsetting! Tune in to ABC Family on June 6th for the “Secret Life” marathon event and the premiere of “Or Not To Be.”
