Secret Life: It’s Not Over Recap

ABC Family ran two Secret Life episodes on Monday, May 30th: “It’s Not Over Til It’s Over” and “To Be.”

The first episode, “It’s not Over Til It’s Over,” opens with the guidance counselor, Katelyn (Beverley Mitchell) trying to get it through to Adrian (Francia Raisa) that she isn’t going to be able to just have her baby and pop back up in school a week later. She also has a little talk with Ben (Ken Baumann). The parents-to-be are both sure their nanny will handle everything. Ricky (Daren Kagasoff) is out in the hallway sexually harassing Amy (Shailene Woodley) as usual, and Katelyn overhears part of it. Besides informing Ricky about a college interview he’s lucky to be up for, she gives him some romance tips.

Ben is having some pre-wedding jitters and confesses to Amy that he doesn’t want to be a 17-year-old husband and father. He takes it back, calling it a moment of weakness.

Ben’s stepmother, Betty (Jennifer Coolidge) can’t go to the Badrian wedding because her brothers and sisters are claiming her mother is dying. Betty says her family is like nomads, but not real nomads. They aren’t even thin like nomadic people. She says they’re really “roaming Idahoans and they eat a lot of potatoes, my mother being the biggest Idahoan of all …” Betty leaves ticking off a list of things she can’t bring around her money-hungry relatives, no jewelry, no credit cards, no expensive beauty creams.” Leo (Steven Schirripa) tells a confused Ben: “Now you see the value of a pre-nup.” That Sausage King is one strange dude. Leo is going to have to take his executive secretary, Camille (Tricia O’Kelley), to the wedding. She’s been spying on Betty and found out that her brother just filed for bankruptcy and her mother is not in any hospital. Although Leo tells her it’s not her job to do that “research” and insists taking her to the wedding with him will not be a date, you can’t help wondering what is really going on here. We like Betty!

Adrian’s parents are bickering over a Protestant minister (Jack’s father) marrying Ben and Adrian. Her mom suggests they call in a priest and a rabbi, then they can say “A minister, a priest and a rabbi walk in to a wedding …” Ruben (Philip Anthony-Rodriguez) says it’s not funny. “I haven’t gotten to the punch line,” Cindy (Paola Turbay) says. The wedding is going to take place in Adrian’s house and Cindy wants Ruben to wear a tux.

Jack’s stepdad is happy to be having dinner with his son in Jack’s crib. Jack (Greg Finley) confides his Madison (Renee Olstead) and Grace (Megan Park) dilemma. He doesn’t want to have sex with Madison as long as there’s a hope that Grace will break up with Grant (Grant Harvey) and want him back. Mr. Pappas (Tom Virtue) tells Jack the only honorable thing he can do is break up with Madison because it’s unfair to make her play second fiddle.

Ricky discusses his college plans with his mom, Nora (Anne Ramsay), and her girlfriend, Ollie (Ion Overman) who can’t keep their hands off each other and ask Ricky if he minds. He doesn’t and he has no objection to them getting married. Nora’s girlfriend also suggests that Nora go back to college.

Their little exchange reveals that Nora might be a little sensitive about her educational background since her girlfriend is a district attorney, but Ollie says “do not go there.”

Another minor theme throughout the show was the status or lack there of romance in the lives of George (Mark Derwin) and Anne Juergens (Molly Ringwald).  George is practically desperate, even inquiring into the guidance counselor’s availability and asking his daughter, Ashley for help! Anne meantime is rekindling a relationship with a high school boyfriend Josh (Mitch Rouse) who prevails upon her to get Ashley and her study buddy Toby to watch Anne’s baby so they can attend his friend’s wedding. Anne doesn’t want to go until she finds out that Karen Corcoran is going to be there.

Adrian discusses her pre-wedding jitters with Tom Bowman (Luke Zimmerman) who says he will always be her friend and she can always count on him. Awwww. Tom is so sweet. Lauren’s ex Jesse not so much. He called Lauren (Camille Winbush) to let her know he has a new girlfriend. “All old boyfriends come back,” Madison says. Lauren says then she ought to be worried that Jack will go back to Grace. It doesn’t look like she’ll have to worry about that yet because Jack claims his conversation with his dad has made him realize how much he wants to be with Madison.

As Ben prepares for the wedding, Leo gives Ben a handkerchief that belonged to his mom to put in his jacket. Leo says if Ben changes his mind at any time during the ceremony, just pull the hanky out and wave it and “we’ll run.” As a montage of all the “Secret Life” couples is shown, Bruno Mars “Just the Way You Are” is playing. Ben and Adrian get married in the small ceremony they decided upon in favor of getting a condo. Just Adrian’s parents and Leo and Camille are there.

Afterwards, Amy looks through the window over to Adrian’s house. Ben is also looking out the window toward her house, and they exchange sad lost puppy looks.
