Final Jeopardy: Military Matters

The Final Jeopardy question (5/25/2012) in the category “Military Matters” was:

In 1934 the lease for this place was increased to $4,085 per year; since 1959 the checks haven’t been cashed.

Will 4-day champ Joel Pool end the week as a 5-day champ? Only if he can defeat these new opponents: Jennifer Arceneaux, from Los Angeles, CA and  Jim Virtel, from Lemont, IL.

Jim found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double right off the bat in “Capital & Country: Same First Letter.” Each player had $400 at this point. He risked the $1,000 allowance but he did not know so he was WRONG.

Jim found the first Double Jeopardy! Daily Double in “Business Schools.” He was in second place now with $3,000, but a daunting $6,800 behind Joel. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

Jim found the last Daily Double in “Fun with Elements.” He was now in the lead with $12,000, $200 more than Joel. He bet $2,000, and he was RIGHT.

Jim finished in the lead with $14,800. Joel was in second place with $11,800 and Jennifer was last with $5,200.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS GUANTANAMO?

According to our information, Fidel Castro stopped cashing the Guantanamo rent checks from the USA in a “symbolic act of protest” in 1960.

“(He once ruefully noted that his government deposited the first check it received, in 1959, which he attributed to ‘a mere confusion.’) From time to time, Castro has been known to impress foreign guests by reaching into his desk drawer and rifling through the scores of uncashed checks, fuming with indignation.” (Quotes are from The Cuba Wars: Fidel Castro, the United States, and the Next Revolution).

Jennifer got it right and added $1,800 to her total to finish with $7,000.

Joel blanked out and lost $3,100 to finish with $8,700.

Jim wrote down Fort Knox. He bet $8,801 so he ended up with $5,999.

Wow, was that wild or what? Kudos to Jennifer for knowing the right answer. But unfortunately, she didn’t bet enough to win. Joel and Jim didn’t make the dueling bets we thought they would, but Jim still bet a bit too much. Joel is now a 5-day champ with a total of $95,300.
