Final Jeopardy: U.S. States (2-15-12)

The Final Jeopardy question (2/15/2012) in the category “U.S. States” was:

This third-smallest state in area is home to the USA’s third-oldest college.

Today we kick off the 2012 Jeopardy! Teachers Tournament with these three educators going up to bat first: Patrick Quinn of Chesterfield, MO, Elissa Hoffman of Appleton, WI, and John Botti of Bethesda, MD.

John got the Daily Double in the Jeopardy! round in the category “Skyscraper City.” With $3,200, he had $200 more than Patrick who was in the lead. He bet $600.00 and he was RIGHT.

Patrick ended up in the lead with $6,800. John was next with $5,800 and Elissa was in third place with $1,800.

In Double Jeopardy, Patrick found the first Daily Double in “Rock Documentaries.” He was already doing fine in this category and now had $11,600, a $5,400 lead over John. He was okay with risking more than that lead and bet $6,000 on his knowledge of the topic. He’s a German teacher and it had to do with Berlin, so we thought he’d get it but he said “Behind the Wall” and that was WRONG.

The $1,600 clue in “Tales of Adventure” was “Joy Adamson & her husband adopted an orphaned lion cub in this true story published in 1960,” and, incredibly, Alex Trebek began to give an additional clue before he caught himself! “I’m sure you remember the …” right then Patrick buzzed in and gave the correct answer. Then Alex said “I was going to say, I’m sure you remember the film …”

Elissa found the last Daily Double in “The Amazon.” She was in third place with $6,200– $3,600 less than John, who held the lead. She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.

Alex seem surprised when none of the contestants got the last clue in “Tales of Adventure” — “It’s the story of the Devil’s Island imprisonment & escape of Henri Charriere.” He said, “Once again, I can say, I bet you saw the movie …” He must have realized later, or it was pointed it out to him, that “Born Free” was made in 1966 and “Papillon” in 1973. None of the contestants looked old enough to be of movie-going age back then, if they were even alive. That accounts for the blank stares.

John finished in the lead with $13,400. Patrick was in second place with $11,600 and Elissa went into Final Jeopardy! with $8,200.

Two out of three correct Daily Doubles today. TWO players got Final Jeopardy right.

WHAT IS CONNECTICUT?

Only Rhode Island and Delaware are smaller than Connecticut. Yale University is the third oldest college in the USA. It was founded in 1701 in the then Colony of Connecticut and incorporated as the Collegiate School. Its name was later changed to Yale College, in 1718, to honor a gift from Elihu Yale, a governor of the British East India Company.

Elissa got it and bet $3,500. She finished with $11,700.

Patrick also wrote down “Connecticut” and bet $8,401. His total was $20,001.

John wrote down “New Hampshire.” He bet $3,000 and ended up with third place with $10,400.

Patrick Quinn becomes the first semi-finalist and we might get a little better feel for how Elissa and John stack up in terms of Wild Card spots on Thursday and Friday.
