Final Jeopardy: Jolly Old England (12-26-11)

The Final Jeopardy question (12/26/2011) in the category “Jolly Old England” was:

Queen Anne liked the Marquess of Normanby, gave him permission to build a huge home in London and made him duke of this.

6-day champion Jason Keller returned today. His total so far? $147,000! Can he do it again? He will have to defeat these 2 new contestants: Jack McClintock of Vermont and Andrea Bornschlegel of California. Alex told Jack and Andrea that Jason is “a force to be reckoned with.”

Guess so. Jason had a $4,000 lead by the first commercial break and the Jeopardy round Daily Double had not yet been found. He found it much later in “Fundraisers.” He had $8,800, a $5,200 lead over his nearest competitor, Jack. He wagered $2,200 and he was RIGHT.

Jason went into Double Jeopardy with $11,600. Jack had $4,400 and Andrea was last with $1,400.

Jack got the first Daily Double in “Books’ First Lines.” He had $8,000 and boldly chose to make it a true Daily Double which would bring him very very close to Jason’s $16,400. If this was American Idol, Randy Jackson would say “Jack’s in it to win it!” And HE WAS RIGHT! Way to go, Jack. The game no longer looked like another Jason runaway.

“Renowned curator Jacques Saunière staggered through the… archway of the museum’s Grand Gallery.” show

Jason the got the second Daily Double in “The Last:” He had $19,200, a $3,200 lead over Jack. Jason only chose to bet $2,000 even though he was doing fine in the category. He was RIGHT, bringing him up to $21,200.

Jason finished the round with $22,400. Jack picked up a couple of big clues by starting at the bottom of “Playing the Ponies” and finished with $18,400. Andrea went into Final Jeopardy with $7,400.

Kudos to the ONE contestant who got Final Jeopardy right but even he wasn’t sure at first. We’re sure we’re not totally alone in thinking this was a ridiculously obscure final Jeopardy. Not exactly the thing you’re going to study up on to go on Jeopardy.

WHAT IS BUCKINGHAM?

“[Buckingham Palace] was originally a townhouse built by John Sheffield, the Duke of Buckingham, and a friend of Queen Anne. In 1703 she granted him the land at the corner of St James’s Park and Green Park on which the Palace now stands. It was first known as Buckingham House.” (Britain Express.com) John Sheffield (1647-1721) was also a friend of English poet, Alexander Pope, and wrote poetry himself.

Andrea wrote down: “What is Queensbury.” Her $7,000 bet left her with $400.

Jack wrote down “What is Duke of York.” He bet $14,400 and finished with $4,000.

Jason wrote down Windsor then crossed it out and wrote Buckingham. He bet $14,500 because he was in it to win it, too. His total today was a whopping $36,900. He let out a little victory whoop. Jason would have won even if he had not crossed out Windsor, but with a LOT less. He mouthed the word “WOW” as his 7-day total of $183,900 was announced.
