Final Jeopardy: 8-Letter Words (9-20-12)

The Final Jeopardy question (9/20/2012) in the category “8-Letter Words” was:

This word that means ‘freedom from narrow restrictions’ can also refer to one of a range of imaginary lines.

2-day champ, Penny Citrola is up to $26,800. Today she takes on two new opponents: Erin Zwiener, from Abiquiu, NM and  Jim Walke, from Greenville, SC.

Erin found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Biblical Speakers Bureau.” She was in the lead with $4,200, $3,000 more than Penny, who was in second place. She bet $2,200 and She was RIGHT.

Erin finished in the lead with $9,800. Penny was second with $4,200 and Jim was last with $2,000.

Erin found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “What the H” very quickly. It was the second clue chosen. She now held the lead with $10,600, $6,400 more than Penny in second place. She confidently bet $3,000 on whether she would know what the ‘H’ stood for and she was RIGHT.

Erin found the last Daily Double in “How Does Sunday Morning Sound.” She had $17,200 at this point, $11,800 more than Penny. She bet $2,200, thought it was the Franklin Cathedral, which was WRONG.

The Washington Ringing Society does its thing on the bells of this cathedral every Sunday.

Erin finished in the lead with $18,200, not quite a runaway since Penny had moved up to $9,800. Dan was in third place with $4,000.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS LATITUDE?

Maybe if the second half of the clue said it also referred to a Dell computer or a line of Jimmy Buffett coffee that rhymes with Attitude, it would have helped. The Online Dictonary has 5 entries for “latitude.” No. 3 is “Freedom from normal restraints, limitations, or regulations.”

Jim had no idea and left it blank. He bet $3,500, so he finished with $500.

Penny wrote down ‘liberate’ and that cost her the whole shebang. Since we somehow knew that Erin did not bet it all, we knew Penny finished in third place.

Erin wrote down ‘out of the box’ which is an 11-letter phrase in any event. She wisely only bet $2,000 so she is our new champion and her total today is $16,200.
