Final Jeopardy: Classic Albums (9-19-13)

The Final Jeopardy question (9/19/2013) in the category “Classic Albums” was:

This 1960s album ends with the line “I’d love to turn you on”.

Current champ Jared Hall is definitely on a roll with a 5-day total of $160,001. To keep it going, he’ll have to defeat these two players today: Hillary Kwiatek, from Bethlehem, PA; and Parth Sheth, from Atlanta, GA.

Jared found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double early in “Female Nobel Peace Prize Winners.” He was in the lead with $600, $400 ahead of Hillary in second place. He bet the $1,000 allowance and he was RIGHT.

Betty Williams & Mairead Corrigan Maguire, co-winners for 1976, were both born in this troubled city. show

Jared finished in the lead with $6,000. Parth was second with $2,800 and Hillary was last with $1,400.

Parth found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “Bacteria.” He had done a fine job of catching up and was in fact in the lead with $8,800, $400 ahead of Jared in second place. He bet $6,000 and he was RIGHT.

Meaning acid-loving, this “good” species of bacteria is used to make yogurt. show

Hillary found the last Daily Double in “Try a Separation.” She was in third place with $7,800, $5,800 less than Parth’s lead. She bet $3,000, and took a guess with “dismembered.” That was WRONG.

This word for “separated” appears in the first sentence of Julius Caesar’s “Gallic Wars”. show

Parth finished in the lead with $13,600. Jared was next with $10,000 and Hillary was in third place with $4,800.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS SGT. PEPPER’S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND?

The line in the clue is from “A Day in the Life,” the final song on Sgt. Pepper: “The supposed drug reference in the line “I’d love to turn you on” resulted in the song initially being banned from broadcast by the BBC…. It was ranked the 28th greatest song of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.”

Hillary wrote down “Sgt. Pepper” after deciding against the White Album. She added $2,400 to her score to finish with $7,200.

Jared got it too and doubled his score. He finished with $20,000.

Parth had the Beatles’ debut album: “Please Please Me.” He lost $6,401 so he ended up with $7,199.

So Jared gets to play another day and now has a 6-day total of $181,001.

Funny that the two clues the contestants missed in “On Their Tombstones” were 1960s songs too: Sonny and Cher’s “The Beat Goes On” (1967), and Dean Martin’s “Everybody Loves Somebody” (1964). Martin had a hit comedy show in the 1960s and here he is singing his signature song with John Wayne.

I’m glad you liked the clip – dino had a great show. He was my favorite singer of the rat pack, sammy davis next.

as for the TOC, I can only guess it happens because they tape the TOC before the season ends

strange…they do the show by season but the toc by calendar year??? or am i missing something here??

  3. vj says:

@john — yes you’ve got it, Parth could only have won if he finished with more than Jared had to bet and he didn’t.

I just updated the TOC list (look in the center column) — still a good list. With today’s game, Jared just passed Ben Ingram so Jared is now No. 1.

It is just as hot here in TX as it is in Maui!!

  4. john blahuta says:

@VJ so, if i got that right: parth would have finished higher, but still no runaway. since he got fj wrong…… only a runaway could have parth saved from losing to jared, since a)jared had more than half of parth’s money and b)jared had fj right. right???:):)

PS – Sorry, I should have made it clear since you didn’t get to see the game — after Parth won that 6K on the DD, he lost $1,000 on a clue in the Separation category. So if he had made it a TDD, he would have finished with $16,600

  6. vj says:

You’re right, John, he still would have lost. I don’t know where I got that idea with the numbers right in front of me. LOL!

I guess I’ll be starting a new TOC list soon. Maybe when we get to see Jared’s final total? If he keeps it going, he could be No. 1 on the list the whole season.

Welcome back to both you and aaaa. :-)

    @VJ
sorry, i am a little out of touch. are we starting a new list for the ToJ??
if so,jared seems already a sure bet to make it there. and they don’t televise j today, so how could parth have won with getting fj wrong? would it have been a runaway if he made the dd you refer to a true dd?

  8. vj says:

and Parth might have won too if he had made his DD a true one :-)

  9. aaaa says:

Jared got bits of luck today, as Hillary might well have won had she gotten her DD right, depending on how they then would have wagered in FJ!
