Final Jeopardy: African-American Firsts (7-8-13)

The Final Jeopardy question (7/8/2013) in the category “African-American Firsts” was:

Tracing her family to William Hood of 18th c. Penn., Karen Batchelor made news as this org.’s first African-American member.

5-day champ, Ben Ingram is back today. He’s up to $115,632. Let’s see how he fares against the first new players of the week: Donna Hesson from Ellicott, MD; and Jonathan Couser from Lee, NH.

Ben found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Random House Defines It As…” He had the lead with $3,000, $3,000 more than everyone else since nobody else had any money. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

Ben finished in the lead with $11,200. Jonathan was second with $400 and Donna was in the red (she was wearing red, too) with minus $600.

Ben found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “Duke, Duke.” He was the lead with $12,800, $12,400 more than Jonathan in second place. He bet $100 and he was RIGHT.

Ben found the last Daily Double in “Poisonous Plants.” In the lead with $19,300, he had $17,100 more than Donna in second place. He again bet $100 and came up with “purple fingers.” That was WRONG.

Ben finished in the lead with $22,000. Jonathan was next with $2,400 and Donna was in third place with $1,400.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO ARE THE DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION?

“They are a group of African American women who have been able to trace their lineage to the nation’s founding patriots. They gathered for lunch five days before the nation was to celebrate its independence to discuss their role as Black members of the nation’s premiere heritage organization for women—the Daughters of the American Revolution. There was Karen Batchelor, who is descended from a White man who fought in the Revolutionary War….” (ABHM)

Donna bet $1,000 and finished with $2,400.

Jonathan bet $600, finishing with $3,000.

Ben once again bet $100 so he won the game with $22,100. His 6-day total is now $137,732.

While Alex Trebek seem pretty frustrated with Ben’s $100 bets, we were just glad we weren’t in Donna or Jonathan’s shoes!
