Final Jeopardy: Opera (7-15-13)

The Final Jeopardy question (7/15/2013) in the category “Opera” was:

This 1871 opera is set in Memphis & Thebes & along the banks of the Nile.

Two-day champ Mark Japinga had a close call on Friday, but it all worked out. Now he’s up to $59,499 in winnings as he defends for the third time. His competition today comes from these two players: Deborah Stowell from Saint Charles, IL and; Bradley King from New York, NY.

Mark found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “1983: 30 Years Ago.” He was in the hole with minus $400, $1,000 behind Bradley’s lead. He bet the $1,000 allowance, and really didn’t know so he guessed “elections.” That was WRONG.

German con artist Konrad Kujau faked these to fool the world (for a while in the spring of ’83). show

Despite a bunch of missed guesses, Mark ran the last category “VWLSS” and finished in the lead with $6,000. Deborah was second with $3,000 and Bradley was last with $3,000.

Mark found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “From A To E.” He was in the lead with $18,400, $7,800 ahead of Deborah in second place. He bet $3,000 and couldn’t come up with a guess so he was WRONG.

Mark found the last Daily Double in “Trees.” Still in the lead with $17,000, he was $8,400 ahead of Deborah in second place. He bet $2,300, and again he had no idea so he was WRONG.

Mark finished in the lead with $16,700. Deborah was next with $8,600 and Bradley was in third place with $5,600.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “AIDA”?

In Verdi’s Italian opera, Aida, set in Ancient Egypt, “a captive Ethiopian princess, Aida, is torn between her love for the Egyptian commander Radames and her loyalty to her own father and country. The lovers must fend off the schemes of a fiercely jealous Egyptian princess and decide whether true love trumps honor and duty.” (Learn more about it on wikipedia)

Bradley bet $5,599 and finished with $11,199.

Deborah bet $8,101, finishing with $16,701.

Mark bet $501 so he won his third game with $17,201. His 3-day total is $76,700.

Mark’s grandmother was in the audience today and maybe that’s why he seemed a bit overanxious, but all’s well that ends well. We’re sure she’s very proud.

A Triple Stumper in “Trees” – Singer Trini Lopez called this fruit tree “very pretty” but the fruit “impossible to eat.” Click here if you never heard Trini sing “Lemon Tree’ or even if you did and just want to hear it again (with lyrics – Alex left out a phrase).

Clue: “From the plateau called this type of platform rock, you could preach quite a sermon to the fish in the fjord 2,000 feet below.” Mark answered Altar Rock (guess he meant in Nantucket), but the correct answer was Pulpit Rock.

I missed the answer in Natural Wonders for the place where there were many people standing on a very high cliff…anyone know it please?

Yeah, Mark was lucky. The middle guy Bradley works in the field – a theater/opera lighting designer. But he turned out to be no threat to Mark.

Americans are weaned on opera. They put it in our cartoons.

mark was lucky to win despite blowing 6.300 on the dd.s. he made up though with the “regular” questions AND had the fortune not to run into stronger opponents.
the fj was a gift, unless you presume that a lot of americans don’t know much about operas/classical music , which is mostly european. sadly this assumption is sort of true, but that’s just my opinion…
