Final Jeopardy: Africa (6-4-12)

The Final Jeopardy question (6/4/2012) in the category “Africa” was:

Very different places, the first 2 African nations to gain independence from a European power were Egypt and this one.

We start out this week with a new champ, Claudia Gray who won $8,000 in Friday’s game. Today she takes on these two new players: Rachel Donegan, from Mount Juliet, TN and  Terry Kent, originally from Eau Claire, WI.

Terry found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Mountain Ranges.” He was in the third place with $400, $3,200 less than Claudia who was in the lead. He bet the $1,000 allowance, said it was the Peloponnesian Peninsula and that was WRONG.

The Rhodope Mountains are one of the most rugged parts of this peninsula.

Claudia finished in the lead with $6,800. Rachel was second with $2,200 and Terry was last with $2,000.

Terry found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “A Sense of Entitlement Programs.” He now had $2,400, still $200 behind Richael and $6,400 behind Claudia. He made it a True Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

In the 1930s, Alf Landon called this government program “a cruel hoax”.

I’m French Moment: On the very last clue in “Keeping Up with the Carolingians,” Terry gave the correct answer to “The poet Turold is thought to have penned this chanson about a Carolingian hero at the Battle of Roncesvalles.” Alex Trebek was seized with the need to supply the French pronunciation of Roland. After Terry said “What is the Song of Roland,” Alex said “yes, the song de Roland (Ro-lahn).” If you are going to put the “de” in there, Alex, don’t you have to say “la chanson”? No wonder people think he’s pretentious.

Right after that, Terry got $3,200 because a Kokopelli doll is as good an answer as a Kachina doll.

And right after that, Terry found the last Daily Double in “Science Grab Bag.” Now he was in second place with $13,600, only $400 less than Claudia’s lead of $14,000. He decided to go with another True Daily Double. He misunderstood the clue, said zirconia and zircon, and that was WRONG.

Of the 10 listings on the Mohs Scale, one of the 2 that end in “Z.”

Claudia finished in the lead with $12,400. Rachel was next with $8,200 and Terry finished in the negative at minus $1,200.

Both contestants eligible to play Final Jeopardy! got it right.

WHAT IS SOUTH AFRICA?

From 123independenceday.com: “Egypt was declared independent on 28 February 1922 from under the British rule and it acquired full sovereignty following World War II. The British government announced their independence without any discussion with representatives from Egypt, leaving the details on 4 issues, of the communications security of British occupation in Egypt, Egypt’s defense, foreign affairs of Egypt, minority races’ protection, and the state of Sudan which were to be ironed out later. On this day, Sultan Ahmad Fuad became King Fuad I and Faruk, Fuad’s son, became his heir.”

“Though South Africa achieved independence from Britain on 31 May, 1910, Freedom Day is the official Independence Day of South Africa. It is celebrated on 27th of April every year and commemorates the first democratic, non racial elections held in 1994. As the official independence day of South Africa, Freedom Day is celebrated to pay tribute to all those men and women who have made relentless efforts and sacrifices on behalf of the oppressed masses.”

Rachel bet it all. She finished with $16,400.

Claudia bet $4,001 to win the game with $16,401. Her 2-day total is $24,401.
