Final Jeopardy: Fictional Pairs (6-18-12)

The Final Jeopardy question (6/18/2012) in the category “Fictional Pairs” was:

These 2 men first meet after one of them tells a friend, Stamford, of needing new lodgings in London.

Two-day champ David Menchaca returned today. His winnings so far total $40,301. But we’ve got two new players hoping that he takes home a second or third prize today. They are: Karen Griffin, from Stoughton, WI and  Neil Ashar, from Washington, D.C.

David found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “A Harrison Ford Fiesta.” He was in second place with $800, $200 less than Neil who was in the lead. He bet the $800 he had even though he could have wagered a grand, and he was RIGHT.

In 2010, for the 25th anniversary of this movie, fans retraced Ford’s footsteps in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO ARE SHERLOCK HOLMES and DR. JOHN H. WATSON?

Sherlock Holmes meets Dr. Watson in the first chapter of “A Study in Scarlet,” while Holmes is in the process of discovering “a re-agent which is precipitated by hæmoglobin.” He excitedly announces he’s found it as Stamford and Watson enter the room “Had he discovered a gold mine, greater delight could not have shone upon his features,” Watson observes. Holmes makes an observation of his own after shaking Watson’s hand: “You have been in Afghanistan, I perceive,” astonishing the good doctor. (A Study in Scarlet, Chapter 1)

Karen wrote down “Marley & Scrooge,” which she obviously thought was hilarious. She lost $1,000 and finished with $6,000.

Neil got it right and bet it all to finish with $28,800.

David also got it and bet $11,501, just one extra buck to assure he would remain champion if he knew the FJ answer. Today’s take: $28,801. Way to go, David!

David seemed a bit incredulous when they read his 2-day total at the start of the game. Guess he’ll be blown away when they read it tomorrow. His 3-day total is $69,102.
