Final Jeopardy: Classic Mystery Novels (5-29-12)

The Final Jeopardy question (5/29/2012) in the category “Classic Mystery Novels” was:

A letter in this mystery says, “We are going… to Luxor and Assuan by steamer, and perhaps on to Khartoum.”

Joel Pool returned after winning his 6th game yesterday for a total of $116,800. To make it to 7, he will need to defeat these two players: Daphne Moulton, from Lakeville, MA. and  Richard Block, from Diamond Bar, CA.

Daphne found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Org. Abbrev.” before the first break. She was in second place with $400, $200 more than Richard and $2,600 less than Joel. She made it a True Daily Double and the clue apparently made her think of lawsuits. She said the American Legal Association which was WRONG.

“Fighting for Air” (medically); ALA. show

Richard finished in the lead with $4,600. Joel was second with $2,800 and Daphne was in third place with $800.

Joel found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “Rubber.” He was still in second place and had $5,600, $2,600 less than Richard. He bet $1,600 and he was RIGHT.

The last Daily Double remained on the board uncovered, under “Virtuosi” ($2,000 clue left) or “Knight Wear” ($1600 and $2000).

Richard finished in the lead with $13,800. Daphne was next with $6,000 and Joel was last with $3,200.

FINAL JEOPARDY! ANSWER: WHAT IS “DEATH ON THE NILE”?

Wow, this was toughie for us though no doubt an easy one for Agatha Christie fans. Just the category made us think of Christie, so that would at least give you an author to work with. Luxor and Assuan (which is now spelled Aswan) are Egyptian cities and what they have in common with the capital of Sudan is they are all on the Nile River. But if mystery novels are not your thing, you’re still sunk. In any event, the 1978 film adaptation of “Death on the Nile featured many famous stars, including Bette Davis, Mia Farrow, Jane Birkin, Olivia Hussey, David Niven, Simon MacCorkindale and Angela Lansbury, and it starred Sir Peter Ustinov in the Hercule Poirot role.

We wonder if the contestants would have made out better if they asked them to name one actor who portrayed Agatha Christie’s famous Belgian detective on film or on TV?

Besides Ustinov, that would include John Moffatt, Albert Finney, Sir Ian Holm, Tony Randall, Alfred Molina and David Suchet.

All the contestants thought of Agatha Christie and they all wrote down “Murder on the Orient Express,” which doesn’t go to Africa.

Joel bet it all and wound up with zero.

Daphne bet $4,000. She finished with $2,000.

Richard bet $1,799 and won the game with $12,001. Nice going! He had his bases covered just in case Daphne bet it all and got it right.
