Final Jeopardy: American Inventors

The Final Jeopardy question (5/28/2012) in the category “American Inventors” was:

This Grammy winner who died in 2009 at age 94 was an inductee into both the Rock & Roll & National Inventors Halls of Fame.

Today, 5-day champ Joel Pool returned to face off against two more challengers: Captain Lawrence Indyk, from Lawrence, KS, who went by the nickname Indy; and Sara Shiver, from Columbia, SC.

Joel found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double before the first commercial break in “World Capital Served By.” He was in a tie with Sara at $1,400. They both had $1,000 more than Indy. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

Joel finished in the lead with $6,800. Sara was second with $4,400 and Indy was last with $1,800.

Indy found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “‘A’uthors.” He was in last place with $3,000, $3,400 less than Joel, still in the lead. He bet $1,500 and he was RIGHT.

Sara found the last Daily Double in “The King of England Who…” She was in the lead with $11,200, $400 more than Joel in second place. She bet $1,000, and she was RIGHT.

Sara finished in the lead with $14,600. Joel was in second place with $10,800 and Indy was in third place with $8,900.

WHO IS LES PAUL?

Les Paul was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. He is considered one of the “architects” of Rock and Roll and a “key inductee.” He was inducted into the Inventors Hall of Fame on May 14, 2005 for his Gibson Les Paul guitar. His Inventor’s Hall of Fame medal one of the items from his estate going up for auction on June 8, 2012. The Hall of Fame medal will start out with a $500 bid and is described as: “A medal suspended from red white and blue ribbon, featuring the portraits of Thomas Edison and Abraham Lincoln reading ‘The patent system added the fuel of interest to the fire of genius, A. Lincoln.’ The back of the medal is engraved “Les Paul / Patent No. 3,018,680 / Solid-Body / Electric Guitar / Inducted 2005.” (Julien’s Auctions)

Indy wrote down “Fender.” He lost $3,100 and finished with $5,800.

Joel got it right and bet $10,700. He finished with $21,500.

Sara wrote down “Johnny Cash” and bet $4,600 so she wound up with $10,000.

So Joel made it over the $100,000 mark with his 6th win at $116,800.
