Final Jeopardy: American Literature

The Final Jeopardy question (5/16/2012) in the category “American Literature” was:

In 2011, in the preface to the 75th anniv. edition, Pat Conroy called this novel “The last Great … Victory of the Confederacy.”

As Power Players Week continues, today’s celebrity contestants are: Chris Wallace, Fox News Sunday anchorman; Katty Kay, BBC World News America anchorwoman; and Dr. Mehmet Oz, cardiac surgeon, author and TV personality.

Alex explained what a Power Player is: a man or a woman, who through his or her writing or comments in the media are able to influence the way the rest of us feel or think about events in the news. Hmmm. We were beginning to think it was Jeopardy! players who couldn’t manage to find all the Daily Doubles. Just kidding — maybe today’s panel will find them all.

Or maybe not. No one found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in the first round. Almost two whole categories went uncovered today, 4 clues in Abrupt Abbrevs. and all of Stars & Causes, plus one clue in Washington D.C.

Katty finished in the lead with $4,000. Chris was next with $3,000 and Dr. Oz was last with $1,000.

Katty found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “Political Cinema.” She was still in the lead, only now she had $5,200, $1,400 more than Chris. She bet $1,000 and gave close to the correct answer. She said ‘comes’ instead of ‘goes’ so she was WRONG.

Chris found the last Daily Double in “The British Are Coming.” He was now in the lead with $7,000, $800 more than Katty. He said he lived his whole life to say “Let’s make it a true Daily Double, but this is way too much money.” So he only risked $2,000, and he was RIGHT.

Chris finished in the lead with $19,400. Katty was next with $7,800 and Dr. Oz was in third place with $3,000.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS GONE WITH THE WIND?

In the preface to the 75th Anniversary edition of GWTW, Atlanta-born author Pat Conroy (“The Prince of Tides” and “The Great Santini”) wrote: “To Southerners like my mother, Gone With the Wind was not just a book, it was an answer, a clenched fist raised to the North, an anthem of defiance. If you could not defeat the Yankees on the battlefield, then by God, one of your women could rise from the ashes of humiliation to write more powerfully than the enemy and all the historians and novelists who sang the praises of the Union. The novel was published in 1936 and it still stands as the last great posthumous victory of the Confederacy.”

Dr. Oz added $2,900 to his total to finish with $5,900.

Katty only bet $200, saying she didn’t risk enough money (for what?). She finished with $8,000.

Chris bet $3,400 to finish with $22,800 and win the $50,000 for his charity, Hope For The Warriors.

Katty won $10,000 for International Women’s Media Foundation and Dr. Oz got the same sum for his charity, HealthCorps.
