Final Jeopardy: Museums

The Final Jeopardy question (4/17/2012) in the category “Museums” was:

For 2010 & 2011, it’s gotten more visitors than any other single museum in the U.S.

New champ Michelle LaLonde, won $18,500 yesterday and returned today to take on these two new opponents: Evan Nolan from Winchester, MA and Mary Harris, from Seattle, WA.

Michelle found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Cowboy Talk.” She had $1,600, $3,000 less than Evan who was in the lead. She made it a true Daily Double and she was RIGHT.

As a verb, it meant to shoot someone; as a noun it referred to a rectangular bar of chewing tobacco. show

And that ended the round. Evan finished in the lead with $4,600. Mary was next with $3,800 and Michelle was in third place with $3,200.

Evan found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “Celebrity Names.” He was in the lead with $5,400 now, $1,600 more than Mary in second place. He risked $3,200 and said he had no idea but took a guess with Kurt Cobain, but that was WRONG.

He got his name in utero after he kicked his pregnant mom as she was looking at a Da Vinci painting. show

Michelle found the second Daily Double in “We’ll Leave Tonight.” She was in second place with $5,600, $1,800 less than Mary who now had the lead. She risked $2,000 and she was RIGHT.

On June 20, 1791, she influenced her husband to flee Paris; too bad his picture was on the nation’s paper money. show

Michelle finished in the lead with $8,800. Judy was now in second place with $7,400 and Evan was in third place with $2,200.

NONE of the players got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE NATIONAL AIR AND SPACE MUSEUM?

“The Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum maintains the largest collection of historic air and spacecraft in the world. It is also a vital center for research into the history, science, and technology of aviation and space flight, as well as planetary science and terrestrial geology and geophysics.

The Museum has two display facilities. The National Mall building in Washington, D.C. has hundreds of artifacts on display including the original Wright 1903 Flyer, the Spirit of St. Louis, the Apollo 11 command module, and a lunar rock sample that visitors can touch. The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center displays many more artifacts including the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, Boeing B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay and Space Shuttle Enterprise.” (NASM website)

Evan bet $2,189 on the Smithsonian Museum of American History. He finished with $11.00.

Mary bet $1,500 and she wrote down the Smithsonian, which was judged too broad. She finished with $5,900.

Michelle bet $5,500 and wrote down the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She finished with $3,300.

Thus a low bet strategy prevails once again in Final Jeopardy and Mary Harris is the beneficiary of it this time.
