Final Jeopardy: Business (3-28-13)

The Final Jeopardy question (3/28/2013) in the category “Business” was:

In 1972, this company bought its first ship, the Empress of Canada, and renamed it the Mardi Gras.

Our new champ today is Tom Carroll, who won an impressive $32,000 yesterday. Today he takes on these two players:  Rebecca Rider from Fresh Meadows, NY; and  Brian Daner from Washington, DC.

Brian found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “On the Money.” He was in third place with $2,400, $3,200 behind Rebecca’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

Some weirdness occurred during the round with an Erie County clue in the “States that Border Canada” category. “This state’s Erie County has a 42-mile border with Canada; don’t try to cross it” Tom said New York and was judged wrong. Rebecca said Michigan and was judged wrong. Brian got it with Pennsylvania. After the break, Alex gave a very convoluted explanation of how they corrected their error in not finding out that New York was an acceptable answer beforehand. Result: Tom got paid, too and Rebecca got back the $400 she got dinged for.

Rebecca finished in the lead with $6,000. Brian was second with $4,800 and Tom was last with $3,200.

More weirdness popped up in this round. In the category “The United States Marines,” Rebecca answered “The Mexican War” to “The red stripe on a Marines blue trousers honors those lost in the battle of Chapultepec.” and was judged correct even though the correct answer is the Mexican-American war. It is of course up to the judges, but this seemed like quite a departure from their normal modus operandi. There should have at least been a “be more specific.” **
** Turns out Mexican War was a good answer and U.S.–Mexican War was, too.

Right after that, Rebecca found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in the same category. She was in the lead with $10,800, $3,600 ahead of Brian in second place. She bet $3,200. She did give a guess (couldn’t understand it) but it was WRONG.

Rebecca found the last Daily Double in “The Write of Spring.” In the lead with $14,800, she had $4,400 more than Brian who was in second place. She bet $2,000, and she was RIGHT.

Rebecca finished in the lead with $16,800. Tom was next with $12,400 and Brian was in third place with $11,200.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS CARNIVAL CRUISE?

A history of the Empress of Canada, with some great pictures, can be found on: (Classic Liners.net: S.S. Mardi Gras) After its stint as the Mardi Gras for Carnival Cruise Lines, it was sold many times and renamed the Olympic, Star of Texas, Lucky Star, Apollo and, in its final reincarnation, the Apollon. It was sold for scrap in 2003.

Brian bet $11,195 and finished with $22,395.

Tom bet $12,399, beating Brian with $24,799.

Rebecca bet $8,800 so she beat the both of them with $25,600. Alex seemed to think she had a third word in there but it looked like she scribbled it out and rewrote Cruises to us. Rebecca will return tomorrow as the new Jeopardy! champ.
