Final Jeopardy: Singers (2-23-12)

The Final Jeopardy question (2/23/2012) in the category “Singers” was:

On the eve of Earth Day, he became the first performer inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame.

Our second semi-final match of the 2012 Teachers Tournament again has one semi-finalist: Brooks Humphrey; and two Wild Card winners Leslie Decker and Nate Rice. That uses up all the Wild Card winners so tomorrow, the other three semi-finalists will square off.

Nate got the Jeopardy! Daily Double in “Other Wonders of the World.” He had $4,400, a $2,600 lead over Leslie, his nearest competition. He couldn’t come up with anything so he was WRONG. We thought he said he was betting $4,400, and we listened to it twice but evidently he bet $2,400.

Leslie finished in the lead with $2,400. Nate was next with $2,000 and Brooks was last with $1,000, after losing half his cash on the last clue about where Michael Dukakis went to college in Pennsylvania. That was in “Potpourri,” a category that pretty much stymied all the players.

In Double Jeopardy, Leslie got the first Daily Double in “Lesser-Known Women.” She now had $3,200, $800 more than Nate. She bet $1,700 and she was RIGHT.

Brooks got the last Daily Double in the category “Toot Sweet.” He was still in third place with $7,000, $3,000 less than Nate and $4,300 less than Leslie. He bravely bet $5,000 and he was RIGHT.

And he then ran the rest of the category.

Brooks finished in first place with $19,200. Leslie was next with $11,300 and Nate was last with $9,600.

None of the contestants were from Colorado, but they ALL got the Final Jeopardy! answer right.

WHO IS JOHN DENVER?

Denver, whose real name was Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr., was actually born in Roswell, New Mexico and moved around with his family a lot as a child. He changed his last name to the capital city of his favorite state when he began his music career and lived in Aspen for a great part of his life.

They think very highly of John Denver and his song, “Rocky Mountain High” in Colorado. The singer’s many accolades, besides being the first person inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame, include being named the State’s poet laureate in 1974. In 2007, “Rocky Mountain High” was added as an official state song. They didn’t retire “Where the Columbines Grow.” They just made “Rocky Mountain High” another official song. When he died in 1997, all state flags were flown at half staff upon the Governor’s order and his ashes were later scattered in the Rocky Mountains.

Nate bet all his dinero and doubled his score to $19,200.

Leslie bet $2,000 and finished with $13,200.

Brooks bet $3,401, finishing with $22,601 and becoming the second finalist who will return next week to duke it out for that $100,000 grand prize.
