Final Jeopardy: Literary Characters (2-17-12)
The Final Jeopardy question (2/17/2012) in the category “Literary Characters” was:
The only title character in her creator’s 6 major novels, she was portrayed in a 1996 film and a 2009 miniseries
Yesterday we had two men and one lady. In Day 3 of the Teachers Tournament, we’ve got two ladies and one man: Catherine Whitten of Plano, TX, Nate Rice of Catlettsburg, KY. and Lisa Johnston of East Boston, MA. Let’s see who gets that semi-final spot today.
Nate got the Jeopardy! Daily Double in the category “Born in 1912.” With $4,000, he was $1,000 behind Lisa, who was in the lead. He bet $1,500 and he was RIGHT.
Born in Italy in 1912, he chose a papal name that honored his 2 immediate predecessors. show
Nate finished in the lead with $6,700. Lisa was second with $5,600 and Catherine was in last with $3,200.
In Double Jeopardy, Lisa found the first Daily Double in “Pirates.” In this tight game, she was in third place with $10,400 but that was only $400 less than Catherine and $2,300 less than Nate. She bet $3,000, chose James Monroe and that was WRONG.
The first Barbary Coast Wars fought on the ‘Shores of Tripoli’ against pirates occurred under this president. show
Lisa then found the last Daily Double in “That’s not Gneiss.” She now had $8,600, $5,400 less than Catherine who was in the lead with $14,000. She bet $3,000 on this Video Daily Double and took a guess with tufa. She was WRONG again.
“This porous volcanic rock floats. After the eruption of Krakatoa, banks of it covered the ocean for miles.” show
Nate finished in the lead with $19,500. Catherine still had $14,000 and Lisa was left with $6,800.
Only one correct Daily Double today. TWO players were correct in Final Jeopardy! — the two you might expect, since it was a question you’d be most surprised to see a woman get wrong.
Emma was Jane Austen’s third novel, published in 1815. Her other five: Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and posthumously, Northanger Abbey (1818) and Persuasion (1818). Romola Garai portrayed the character, whose full name is Emma Woodhouse, in the 2009 BBC mini-series and Kate Beckinsale played her in the 1996 TV movie.
Lisa bet it all and finished with $13,600.
Catherine bet $7,173. She finished with $21,173.
Nate wrote down “Jane Eyre.” Charlotte Brontë had another title heroine named “Shirley” (unconventional for its time because Shirley was a boys name). She began a novel before her death also entitled “Emma” that was completed by another author and published posthumously. Her Emma’s last name was Brown.
Nate only bet $3,000. So he finished with $16,500.
Catherine wins the semi-final spot. Nate and Lisa are now the two top contenders for Wild Card spots. We end the week with these results:
Semi-finalists so far:
Catherine Whitten $21,173
Patrick Quinn $20,001
Brooks Humphreys $13,700
The Wild Card scores to beat are now:
Nate Rice $16,500
Lisa Johnston $13,600
Elissa Hoffman $11,700
John Botti $10,400
Today’s tale of woe: you probably have no idea of the many obstacles that interfere with the Jeopardy! recap. Today’s was an electrical blackout that lasted about an hour not long after the show ended!
