Final Jeopardy: Sporting Events (12-7-11)
The Final Jeopardy question (12/7/2011) in the category “Sporting Events” was:
The cup presented since 1887 to the man who wins this is inscribed “single handed champion of the world.”
New champion, Julia Kozicki, returned to face off against two new contestants: Jennifer Bernstein from the Show Me State, and Tony Hightower from the Empire State.
Alex started off with some totally gratuitous information about Bhibha Das wanting to replace him as the Jeopardy! host and also said that one contestant today, Tony Hightower, had the same aspiration. Uh, okay.
Jennifer got the Jeopardy! Daily Double in “I’m on Strike:” She was in second place with $4,000 and bet $1,000. She thought it was dockworkers and that was WRONG but she was still in second place.
Declaring “there is no right to strike against the public safety”, Mass. Governor Coolidge broke a 1919 strike by them. show
Tony finished first with $7,400. Jennifer was next with $3,800 and Julia, who wasn’t too quick on the buzzer in this round, was last with $2,400.
Julia got the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “‘Clue: The Shakespeare Version.” Now in second place with $6,800, she chose to risk $5,000. She was right and now was in the lead with $400 more than Tony.
It was Hamlet in the Queen’s chamber, stabbing this man through a curtain show
Tony got the last Daily Double of the game in “It’s a Mad Mad World.” In the lead with $13,800, Tony chose to risk $3,000. With the ladies nipping at his heels more than once, we thought it would be more. He blew it so it was certainly for the best, and he was still in the lead (but by a lot less).
The volcanic soil of this Atlantic Island helps give a distinct rich flavor to the fortified wine named for it show
Tony was first going into Final Jeopardy with $11,600. Julia got ahead of him for a couple of clues but gave a wrong response that put her back in second place with $10,600. Jennifer was last with $8,600. A pretty tight round.
We thought a Sports category would go in Tony’s favor, but he was the only one who made a facial expression indicating he wasn’t too sure he had it while the music played. It turned out he was the only ONE who got the Final Jeopardy answer correct.
WHAT IS WIMBLEDON?
“The Gentlemen’s Singles champion receives a silver gilt cup 18.5 inches (about 47 cm) in height and 7.5 inches (about 19 cm) in diameter. The trophy has been awarded since 1887 and bears the inscription: “All England Lawn Tennis Club Single Handed Championship of the World.” (wikipedia)
There’s actually another Wimbledon Cup that was established in the 1870s, awarded for markmanship, but it wasn’t the incorrect answer given by either of the ladies.
Jennifer bet $8,599 and answered “What is the Chess World Championship.” (We would have gone with arm wrestling before chess.) She was left with $1.00.
Julie put down “What is the U.S. Open” (after crossing out Wimbledon, alas). Her $10,000 bet left her with $600.
Tony added $9,700 to his score, winning the game with a total of $21,300.
