Final Jeopardy: Contemporary American Writers (12-29-11)
The Final Jeopardy question (12/29/2011) in the category “Contemporary American Writers” was:
Concluding a 4-book series, his 2004 novel “Folly and Glory” features Kit Carson, William Clark & Jim Bowie.
Jason Keller made his 10th Jeopardy appearance today. Will he hang in there another day? These two new contestants came on board to take their shot at defeating him: Dave Leach from Georgia and Jennifer Green from Tennessee.
In the Jeopardy round, the Daily Double was all the way at the end in the category “Official British Royal Posts” and Dave got it. In the lead with $3,800, he chose to wager $2,000 and he was RIGHT.
Edmund Halley was the second this “royal” from 1720 to 1742. show
That, and the fact that Jason took a hit right on the prior clue, helped Dave pull ahead and finish in the lead with $5,800. Jason was second with $3,000, and Jennifer was last with $2,200.
In Double Jeopardy, Jennifer found the first Daily Double in “Daylight Come.” Dave had added quite a bit to his lead by now and had $16,200. In second place with $8,200, Jennifer rejected the true Daily Double idea Alex always throws out, and wagered $3,000. You could immediately see that she regretted not taking Alex up on that because she was RIGHT.
When in Rome, Eos, goddess of dawn, went by this name. show
After quite a bit of hunting and with time running out, Jason got the second Daily Double in “The Third-Most Popular Presidential Choice” (which was given, and the contestants had to name who won the election). He had $8,800 to Dave’s $19,000 and this would have been his chance to get within striking distance, but it was obvious he was not at all sure of success. He bet $3,000 and he was WRONG.

Time ran out, so Dave finished in the lead with that $19,000. Jennifer was next with $11,200 and Jason was last with $8,800.
NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy right, although one was painfully close.
WHO IS LARRY MCMURTRY?
“In ‘The Berrybender Narratives’ … the author of ‘Lonesome Dove’ delivers the unforgettable story of an idiosyncratic pioneer family and a truly unique view of the American West, reminding us again that his writing ‘has the power to clutch the heart and also to exhilarate’” (The New Yorker).
The names of the other volumes are: ‘Sin Killer,’ ‘The Wandering Hill’ and ‘By Sorrow’s River.’
Jason wrote down “Grisham.” He bet $7,000 leaving him with $1,800.
Jennifer wrote down “McMurty.” Leaving out that “r” cost her $11,198. She was left with $2 and relegated to third place. Horrors of horrors because, obviously, she knew who it was.
Dave wrote down “Michener,” but Dave only bet $3,401. He won the game with $15,599, and will go down in Jeopardy! history as the man who took Jason Keller down without even getting Final Jeopardy! right.
Jason added the 2nd place prize to his 9-day winnings of $213,900. He will be back for the next Tournament of Champions, fulfilling a dream. Alex didn’t tell us what color boxer shorts Jason was wearing today. If they were orange, it didn’t work out today, like yesterday when he also had an orange shirt.
