Final Jeopardy: Islands (12-22-11)
The Final Jeopardy question (12/22/2011) in the category “Islands” was:
1 of the 2 islands with a population exceeding 100 million; each one is part of an Asian country.
4-day champion Jason Keller returned today to see if he could continue his reign and add even more to his $94,800 winnings. New contenders, Isaac Patterson of Washington and Niall Prendergast of Vermont, also wanted to get a piece of that Jeopardy! pie.
Jason found the Jeopardy round Daily Double before the first commercial break in “A Matter of Some Gravity.” He had nothing having just got out of the hole, but Jason went for the whole $1,000 allowance. He was RIGHT and jumped into the lead for a few seconds.
Building on the work of Galileo & Kepler, he published the first quantitative theory of gravitation in 1687. show
The lead then went back and forth between Jason and Niall, with Jason finally prevailing in the majority of the category “George Strait to No. 1.” Jason went into Double Jeopardy with $7,600. Niall had $4,400 and Isaac was last with $2,400.
Jason found the first Daily Double in “Try State Area.” He had $11,800 and chose to bet $2,000 because this wasn’t exactly “2-Letter Words” or the “NFL,” was it? No, it wasn’t and he did not pick what is now the 24th largest state so he was WRONG.
59,425 total square miles, today the biggest of the original 13. show
Niall got the second Daily Double in “In Britain’s National Portrait Gallery.” With $12,000, he was $10,200 behind Jason. He only bet $4,000 although he was doing splendidly in the category. We would have bet all of Jason’s $22,200 that Niall knew the sisters in the well-known portrait and he was RIGHT.
It looks like the painter initially included himself but then changed his mind. That shy artist was Branwell, the brother of these literary siblings, in their only group portrait.” show
Time ran out so Jason was in the lead with that $22,200 and Niall now had $16,000. Isaac was $1,000 in the red so he could not play Final Jeopardy, but he still will get the third place prize of $1,000. You might say that got him out of the hole.
BOTH contestants got Final Jeopardy right and both picked the same island.
WHAT IS HONSHU?
“Honshu is the largest island of Japan and is called the Mainland. It is south of Hokkaido across the Tsugaru Strait, north of Shikoku across the Inland Sea, and northeast of Kyushu across the Kanmon Strait. Kyoto was the imperial capital of Japan until 1869 and is full of historic sites including famous temples. The river Gawa runs through the city.”
The other possible answer was: WHAT IS JAVA?
The capital of Indonesia Jakarta is located in Java. It is known all over the world for being the most populated of the entire islands on earth. The island of Java is also one of the prime historical places of the country as it still has remnants of the rich Hindu era of the country which attracts tourists from around the world.

Niall bet $6,201, hoping Jason would crap out. He finished with $22,201.
We were betting Jason would pick Java (we even committed that to a text message) but he fooled us. He bet $10,000 and won the game with a total today of $32,300. His 5-day total is $127,000.
Fabuloso!
