Final Jeopardy: Word Origins (12-2-11)

The Final Jeopardy question (12/2/2011) in the category “Word Origins” was:

This word for a friend comes from the Latin for “with whom you would eat bread.”

2-day champ, Jan Zasowski, tried to finish off the week with a third win today. His competition: Suzanne Judson-Whitehouse from Massachusetts, and Bhibha Das originally from Illinois.

Getting off to a slow start didn’t prevent Suzanne from finding the Jeopardy! Daily Double in the category “Going National.” She had $800 and risked that amount, not the $1,000 she could have. Although unsure, her guess was RIGHT.

Bhibha finished this round in the lead with $6,200. Jan was in second place with $2,600 and Suzanne was last with $2,200.

In Double Jeopardy, Jan got the first Daily Double in “Nutritional Supplements.” He was in third place with $3,400 and chose to make it a true Daily Double. He was WRONG and got wiped out.

It was not looking good for Jan but he managed to rebound by killing most of the “Rock’s Frontmen & Women” category. The buzzer rang right after he gave the name of Debbie Harry’s group and we never got to see the other Daily Double which was either the $2,000 clue in “Vice Presidents” or the $200 clue in “The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.”

Bhibha finished first with $11,000. Jan was second with $9,200 and Suzanne went into Final Jeopardy with $7,400.

Jan and Bhibha finished writing before the Final Jeopardy music ended, and Suzanne finished right with it. TWO had the correct response.

WHAT IS COMPANION?

The Latin word for bread is “panis.” Even if you don’t know Latin, you might know the word for bread in Italian (pane), Spanish (pan) and/or French (pain) for at least a hint. Here’s a link to companion in the Online Etymology Dictionary.

Suzanne wrote down “buddy.” That cost her $4,000 and brought her final score down to $3,400 (third place).

Jan had the correct answer. He bet $9,194, bringing his total to $18,394.

But Bhibha also had the correct response and a $9,201 bet. That extra dollar would have got her the championship even if Jan bet all of his $9,200. Congrats to Bhibha.

Jan won the second place prize of $2,000 plus his 2 day total: $46,601. Not bad for 2 days work.

Just like last week, we will be back on Monday with a new lady champion.
