Final Jeopardy: Organizations (11-30-11)
The Final Jeopardy question (11/30/2011) in the category “Organizations” was:
On Nov. 17, 1871 Union Vets, dismayed by soldiers’ lack of proficiency in one skill, formed this organization.
New champ, Kiran Kedlaya, returned today to try to duplicate his $30,801 success on Tuesday. Two new contestants, Tim Gray from Virginia, and Jan Zasowski from Illinois, were on hand to take their best shot.
Tim was proving to be a serious challenger in the Jeopardy! round, and was in the lead by the first commercial break with the Daily Double not yet revealed. It was found by Kiran in the category “Corruption Junction” immediately after we got to know the players a little better. Kiran made it a true Daily Double with a $3,200 bet. He thought it was Andrew Jackson and that was WRONG.
Scandals during this president’s tenure included the Whiskey Ring, the Indian Ring and the Credit Mobilier Crisis. show
Tim finished in the lead with $5,800. Kiran made a valiant effort to recover, ending up in second place with $3,800, and Jan was last with $800. Weird how their scores all ended with $800.
Jan got the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “Weather.” He was now in second place with $7,800 and chose to risk it all. He was RIGHT so Tim and Kiran had some catching up ahead of them.
Meterologist Vilhelm Bjerknes popularized this 5-letter term for the place where war & cold air masses meet. show
Jan’s next pick revealed the second Daily Double in “Egyptian Mythology.” We didn’t think he was going to bet it all and he didn’t. He risked $4,200, as Alex teased him. But the smile on his face said he knew it. He was RIGHT and now had $19,800.
“This tome was a collection of spells, charms & magical formulas for the deceased to use in the afterlife.” show
Jan finished the round with $22,200. Kiran was next with $13,400 and Tim had $11,400 going into Final Jeopardy.
Jan and Tim took a bit longer to finish writing their Final Jeopardy answer than Kiran on this one. Only ONE of them got it right:
WHAT IS THE NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION?
Civil War veterans led by Army and Navy Journal editor William Conant Church organized the NRA in New York in 1871, with General Burnside as President and George Wood Wingate as secretary.
“Out of ten soldiers who are perfect in drill and the manual of arms, only one knows the purpose of the sights on his gun or can hit the broad side of a barn.” ~ General Burnside. (NRA Facebook)
Tim didn’t even take a guess, bet everything and finished with zero.
Kiran wrote down the Boy Scouts (organized in the early 20th century). That cost him $10,000. He went to second place with $3,400.
Congrats to Jan. He had the correct answer and added $4,601 to his score, becoming the new champ with $26,801.
