Final Jeopardy: Movie Characters (11-21-11)

The Final Jeopardy question (11/21/2011) in the category “Movie Characters” was:

900 years old when he died, he spoke in OSV syntax, object-subject-verb.

Morgan Polikoff came back today, after winning $25,000 in Friday’s game. We haven’t had a two-day champion since Sunny Stalter at the end of October. That seems pretty long but it’s really only 5 days of one-day champs, because of the Tournament of Champions. Will Morgan be the one to break that string? Only if he can beat today’s challengers: Caroline Wilkins, from Maryland, and Francis Lansagnan, from Virginia. Let’s see who played the strongest game:

In the Jeopardy! round, all 3 players started out with fine performances and it was a tight match. Then Francis pulled ahead with his knowledge of Australian animals. He also got the Daily Double in “Pick a Card.” Francis had $5,200, a $2,000 lead over Morgan. He decided to bet $3,000 and he got it RIGHT.

In a standard international deck, he’s the only one-eyed king. show

Morgan got a few licks in in the last category where they named the mountain peaks and the contestant had to give the state name, but at the end of the round, Morgan only had $5,600, half of Francis’ lead of $11,200. Caroline was in last place with $2,400.

Francis came on strong in Double Jeopardy and had $14,800 when he got the first Daily Double in “U.S. Airforce.” He bet $5,000 and said it was “the Marshall Plan.” That was WRONG so he went down to $9,800.

This European operation that began in 1948 was the independent USAF’s first major international challenge. show

Caroline got the second Daily Double in “5 Consonants in a Row” because for some reason, Morgan skipped over the $800 clue and went straight for the $1,200 one. Caroline knew that answer, then went back to the $800 clue, turning up a question she had all to herself. Alex encouraged her to try to take first place away from Francis by betting her whole $9,200, but Caroline only went with a $5,000 bet. Quel dommage, as Alex might say if he was showing off his French. It was an easy one, for sure.

Francis finished in the lead with $20,200. Caroline came second with $14,200 and Morgan was last with $11,600.

Francis was the only one who looked like he was sure he had the right answer. After the music ended, Alex said that one of the character’s most famous lines was “Your father he is.” Two of the players had the correct response.

WHO IS YODA

Yoda, a Jedi master (of unknown species) in the Star Wars universe, appears in the 2nd and 3rd original Star Wars films, and also in the 3 prequel trilogy films.

Here are a couple more Yoda quotes from Wookieepedia:

“Much to learn, you still have.”
“Lost a planet, Master Obi-Wan has. How embarrassing… how embarrassing.”

Morgan got it and made a conservative bet of $2,600, which brought him up to $14,200.

Caroline bet $13,000 and wrote down “Methusala,” putting her in third place with $1,200. (Methuselah was 969 when he died, a bit older than Yoda.)

Francis finished his totally strong game with the right response and a bet of $8,201, making sure no one could beat him if he was right. That brought him up to $28,401, so now we have to look to Francis to break The Curse of the One-Day Champion.
