Final Jeopardy: Presidential Election History (10-8-13)

The Final Jeopardy question (10/8/2013) in the category “Presidential Election History” was:

In 1948 he won South Carolina with 72% of the vote & 3 other states but finished a distant third overall.

New champ Mary Murrell won $7,100, and the title as the only one who knew Final Jeopardy! yesterday. She is back today to take on two new opponents: Jason Idalski, from Ypsilanti, MI; And Erin Hoesly, from Fredericksburg, VA.

Erin found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Evacuate!” She was in the lead with $3,800, $200 ahead of Jason in second place. She bet $1,600 and she was RIGHT.

In 1906, the Southern Pacific Railroad evacuated more than half of this city’s 40,000 people. show

Erin finished in the lead with $6,200. Jason was second with $4,600 and Mary was last with $1,600.

Jason found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “Brahms Away!” In second place with $5,800, he was $400 behind Erin’s lead. Not too sure of his knowledge of Brahms, he bet $5.00 (only because he couldn’t bet $4.00) on this audio DD, and took a guess with “the polka.” That was WRONG.

A youthful stint accompanying violinist Eduard Reményi led to an interest in this national music & its dances. show

Jason found the last Daily Double in “Begins & Ends with G.” He now had a big lead with $13,395, and was $6,995 ahead of Mary in second place. He bet $5,005, and he was RIGHT.

Jason finished with a runaway $20,800. Mary was next with $8,000 and Erin was in third place with $4,600.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS STROM THURMOND?

In addition to his home state, Thurman carried Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi. Thomas Dewey carried 16 states and the winner, Harry S. Truman, carried 28. (1948 Presidential Election)

Erin wrote down Huey Long. She lost $4,000 and finished with $800.

Mary got it right and added $1,250 to her score to finish with $9,250.

Jason also got it right. He bet $4,799, winning the game with $25,599.

We know Jason doesn’t feel bad at all about missing that Hungarian answer, but we still think he’ll feel justified in his answer if he sees this cartoon, where they use the music played for that Daily Double. It’s called “Pigs in a Polka.” (He may have already seen it if you check out the millions of times it’s been viewed on youtube!)
