Final Jeopardy: Art in the U.S. Capitol (10-24-13)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (10/24/2013) in the category “Art in the U.S. Capitol” was:

Members of the Hungarian, Swedish & Israeli Parliaments spoke when a bust of this foreign diplomat was unveiled.

3-day champ Bill Tolany has won $44,200 so far. Today he takes on these two players: Mike Shapiro, from Denver, CO; and Rebecca Anderson, from Phoenix, AZ.

We didn’t get to the Jeopardy! round Daily Double today, no doubt partly thanks to a video category, “What’s on Your Ipod” read by celebrities. Now what was that Alex was saying the other week about trying to make enough time to get through the entire round? It was one of the 3 clues left on the board under “Hospital Corners”.

Bill finished in the lead with $5,400. Rebecca was second with $3,800 and Mike was in the hole with minus $200.

Mike found the first Daily Double in “‘P’oets.” He was now in second place with $5,000 (nice recovery!), $7,200 less than Bill’s big lead. He bet $2,500, and he was RIGHT.

Bill found the last Daily Double in “A Day on the Boat.” In the lead with $12,200, he was $1,500 ahead of Mike in second place. He bet $2,000 but did not know so he was WRONG.

Bill finished in the lead with $13,800. Mike was next with $12,300 and Rebecca was in third place with $3,400.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS RAOUL WALLENBERG?

“The bronze portrait bust of Raoul Wallenberg, donated to the United States Congress in 1995, was created in 1988. It stands 20 inches in height and is located in Emancipation Hall in the Capitol Visitor Center…. The sculptor, Miri Margolin, depicted the subject’s strong nose and showed him in a business suit and tie. The surface is enlivened by the tool marks in the original rough clay from which the bronze was cast. The shaft of polished Swedish granite on which the bust sits was a gift from the government of Sweden.” (Raoul Wallenberg Bust)

Alex told the players that the individual in question was Swedish before getting their replies, so they all knew they were wrong right off the bat.

Rebecca wrote down “Weisel.” She lost $3,300 and finished with $100.

Mike thought it was Kissinger. He lost $8,899 and finished with $3,401.

Bill wrote down “Desrali.” He lost $12,300 so he ended up in second place with $1,500.

So Mike Shapiro became the new Jeopardy! champ, most likely wishing he bet a couple thousand less! But a win is still and win and we will see Mike tomorrow to wrap up this week.
