Final Jeopardy: AFI’s 100 Funniest Films (10-21-13)

The Final Jeopardy question (10/21/2013) in the category “AFI’s 100 Funniest Films” was:

These 2 films were No 1 & No. 2 on the AFI’s list of Funniest American Films; both involve cross-dressing.

New champ Nolan Martch won $2,000 on Friday in a crazy FJ upset. Maybe he’ll have better luck with the money today as he takes on these two players: Bill Tolany, from Austin, TX; and Sharon Warner, from Chicago, IL.

Sharon found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Well, I’m Warm-Blooded” before the first break. She was in second place lead with $200, $3,000 behind Bill’s lead. She bet the $1,000 allowance and she was RIGHT.

Nolan finished in the lead with $6,600. Bill was second with $5,400 and Sharon was last with $3,000.

Sharon found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “Books About Women” on the second pick. Everyone still had the same scores as above. She bet $2,000, but couldn’t come up with a timely guess so she was WRONG.

After this book was released in 1997, Mineko Iwasaki, on whom it was based, sued for defamation. show

Bill found the last Daily Double in “1990s Hitmakers.” In the lead with $14,600, he had $3,200 more than Nolan in second place. He bet $6,000 and thought it was “Crazy.” That was WRONG.

In 1998, Aerosmith had its first No. 1 single with this hit that begins “I could stay awake just to hear you breathing.” show

Bill finished in the lead with $10,600. Nolan was next with $10,200 and Sharon was in third place with $1,000.

Upon returning from the break, Nolan got dinged for $2,400 for saying anti-meridiem in a previously accepted answer when he should have said ante-meridiem, so he was still in second place but going into FJ with $7,800.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT ARE “SOME LIKE IT HOT” AND “TOOTSIE”?

No. 1 on AFI’s list was the 1959 classic “Some Like It Hot” starring Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis as 2 jazz musicians on the run from the mob. They pose as women and make friends with Marilyn Monroe.

No. 2 was 1982’s “Tootsie” starring Dustin Hoffman as an out-of-work actor who finally gets a job when he poses as a woman. A youtube with an interview with Hoffman is included below to show the way Tootsie is really pronounced. Alex Trebek kept saying “toot-see” as though the first part rhymes with loot. It rhymes with foot.

Sharon got it right and doubled her money. She finished with $2,000.

Nolan had “Tootsie” and “Mrs. Doubtfire.” He lost $5,600 and finished with $2,200.

Bill also got it. He bet $5,100 so he ended up with $15,700, and Bill is the new Jeopardy champ.

@aaaa – yeah, my bad, I actually fixed that spelling and forgot to save it. Hard time today – don’t feel well and my antenna went out for a part of the show. Grrr!

For the record, though, Nolan did say meridiem – it was the first part he got wrong and Alex said “we’ll accept that,” then they evidently changed their minds.

MeridiaM, not Meridian. The clue said it ended with M, further bolstering the need for the buzz.
