Final Jeopardy: Novels (10-15-13)

The Final Jeopardy question (10/15/2013) in the category “Novels” was:

Ch. 1 of this 1952 books ends, “This is about the way the Salinas Valley was when my grandfather… settled in the foothills”.

New champ, Chris Gaiman won the title yesterday and $14,401. Today she is up against two new opponents: Stuart Anderson, originally from New Orleans, LA; and Emily Horne, from Washington, DC.

Emily found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Hit Parades.” She was in second place with $4,000, $1,600 behind Chris’s lead. She bet $2,000 and said “the New Year’s Day Parade.” Alex asked her to be more specific and she said “the New York New Year’s Day Parade.” That was WRONG.

In 1893, this popular parade adopted a “Never on Sunday” policy so the 2012 one was held on January 2. show

Chris finished in the lead with $5,600. Stuart was second with $3,400 and Emily was last with $2,000.

Stuart found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “Libraries.” He was in third place with $3,800, $3,400 less than Chris in first place. He bet $1,800. It was awfully quiet as we gazed at the picture, but Stuart came through at the last second with the RIGHT answer.

Inspired by the ancient one, the new bibliotheca of this city opened in 2002. show

Stuart found the last Daily Double in “Sir Walter Raleigh.” Now in the lead with $8,800, he was $800 ahead of Chris in second place. He bet $400 and he was RIGHT.

Although Raleigh never made the trip, his expedition of 1585 founded this first English colony in North America. show

Stuart finished in the lead with $9,200. Emily was next with $8,400 and Chris was in third place with $8,000.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “EAST OF EDEN”?

Salinas is well-known as the birthplace of author John Steinbeck. In the beginning of “East of Eden,” the author describes the sights, sounds, smells and colors of the Salinas Valley. The Hamilton family patriarch, Samuel, got his name from Steinbeck’s maternal grandfather. The entire sentence reads: “This is about the way the Salinas Valley was when my grandfather brought his wife and settled in the foothills to the east of King City.” (East of Eden: Chapter 1)

Chris thought it was “The Grapes of Wrath,” which was published in 1939. She lost $1,201 finishing with $6,799.

Emily had the same answer. She lost $4,600 and finished with $3,800.

Stuart got it right. His $7,601 bet brought him up to a winning total of $16,801. And we have our second new champ of the week.

i am still trying to figure out why emily bet 4.600 ?? am i having a “block” or was this just a random bet?

Grapes of Wrath was the 1930s, which eliminated that if one remembered it was written in the wake of the 1930s Dust Bowl drama.
