Final Jeopardy: 70s Oscars (1-2-12)
The first Final Jeopardy question of the year (1/2/2012) in the category “70s Oscars” was:
This film whose title refers to an establishment holds the record for most wins, 8, without winning best picture.
2-day champion Dave Leach returned today to go for a third win. These two new contestants showed up to try to become today’s champ: Elizabeth Weichel from Raleigh, NC and Art Hilliker from Irwin, PA.
Alex is still talking about Jason Keller and brought up the possibility of Dave matching Jason’s over-200K winnings. We cringe.
Dave charged through the “Prefixes” category and landed on the Daily Double on the 4th clue. He made it a true Daily Double with his $1,200 but he was WRONG. Next time, Dave, think of the old alarm clock.

Dave picked up the last clue and came out of that category with $1,000. Art sure knew his stuff in the “Super Bowl” category but Elizabeth managed to get out of the hole by snatching the last clue out from under him.
Alex was having such a grand time, he didn’t even notice when the round was over. Art finished in the lead with $7,000. Dave was second with $5,600, and Elizabeth was last with $1,000.
In Double Jeopardy, Dave found the first Daily Double in “That ‘Bit’ at the End.” He had $6,400 and decided to wager $5,000. Dave didn’t have his thinking cap on with these Daily Doubles today. He couldn’t come up with a response so he was WRONG. We know, if you were watching, you got it.

After some more ups and downs, Dave got the second Daily Double in “Sculpture.” He bet $2,500 of his $7,800. It came to him after a few tense seconds and he was RIGHT.
He carved a bust of Lincoln for the U.S. Capitol Rotunda; his much bigger one is in South Dakota. show
Art finished this round in the lead with $13,000. Dave was next with $11,900 and Elizabeth was in a decent enough position with $7,000.
Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy right, the one we bet would.
WHAT IS CABARET?
Although “Cabaret” did not beat out “The Godfather” for Best Picture, Joel Grey did beat James Caan, Al Pacino and Robert Duvall for Best Supporting Actor. Bob Fosse also beat out Francis Ford Coppola as Best Director.
Elizabeth wrote down “Casino,” a 1996 flick with only one nomination (Sharon Stone, Best Actress). Elizabeth bet $3,000 ending up with $4,000.
Dave kicked butt in the “Movie Quotes” category last week, so we were anticipating his first correct Final Jeopardy. He did indeed get it right but only bet $2,101, bringing his score up to $14,001.
Art was in the right decade with “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” from 1975, but 5 was the number of Oscars that film won (out of 10 nominations). Art bet $12,900 and ended up in third place with $100. That meant an extra grand for Elizabeth.
We were a little worried there about jinxes, as we always are when Alex compares contestants or comments on how hard they are to beat, but it all worked out and Dave’s 3-day total is $48,684.
