Final Jeopardy: U.S. Population (1-17-12)

The Final Jeopardy question (1/17/2012) in the category “U.S. Population” was:

Between 2000 & 2010, these 2 states that border each other led the nation in highest percentage of population increase, 35% & 25%.

New champion, Betsy Schroeder showed up today to take a stab at winning a second time. Her opponents today were: Amy Stephenson from Sunnyside, NY, and Daniel Hodge from Charlotte, NC.

In the Jeopardy! round, they had a whole category devoted to Muhammad Ali at 70, to honor his birthday. Betsy started the round off in that category with this $200 clue – “Future heavyweight Muhammad Ali was born in Louisville Jan. 17, 1942 and named this.” We thought the Daily Double would be in that category for sure, but it wasn’t.

The Daily Double was in the category “Ordinally Speaking” and Betsy found it. She had $4,200, a $600 lead over Daniel. She bet $1,000. She thought it was a “private first class.” That was WRONG.

Daniel finished the round in the lead with $5,800. Betsy was second with $3,600 and Amy was right behind her with $3,200.

In Double Jeopardy, Amy got the first Daily Double in “Legal Matters.” She was only $800 behind Betsy, who had the lead with $6,000. She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.

Daniel got the last Daily Double in “Classical Music.” He was now in second place with $600 less than Amy, who was in the lead with $7,200. (Alex incorrectly said he was $1,600 behind Amy — sometimes that visual subtraction doesn’t compute). He boldly wagered $5,000 and a big smile appeared on his face as the clue was read. He was RIGHT.

Daniel finished in the lead with $22,400. Amy was next with $14,400 and Betsy was last with $8,000.

ONE contestant got the Final Jeopardy question right.

WHAT ARE ARIZONA AND NEVADA.

It would have been a lot easier if they only asked for one of the states, but you had to get them both right.

Betsy picked Arizona and New Mexico, but she bet nothing so she still had $8,000.

Amy picked the right one to go with Arizona, bet $4,000 and ended up with $18,400.

Daniel picked the same two states as Betsy, bet $6,401 and landed in second place with $15,999.

A really tight game today with close scores most of the time and each contestant getting in the lead at some point.

Congrats to Amy, not only for winning but for getting that Final Jeopardy right! You go, girl!
