Final Jeopardy: Food Etymology (1-11-12)
The Final Jeopardy question (1/11/2012) in the category “Food Etymology” was:
Keith Downey developed rapeseed into this cooking product, now a huge cash crop for farmers in Saskatchewan.
Current champ, Dan McShane is up to 3 wins and he’s back to take on two new players: Vinayak Thiagarajan from Chicago, IL and Katy Stigers from Bristol, TN. Will one of them whip his butt?
Well, Dan was in the lead with $2,000 when he found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Travel,” but Vinayak was nipping at his heels with $1,600. Dan was in a true Daily Double kind of mood and he got it RIGHT.
“This island’s Mataveri Intl. Airport, the world’s most remote, is serviced only by Chile’s Lan Airlines.” show
Vinayak ran the category “Come ‘In'” where every answer had ‘in’ in it. He took over the lead for a little bit, but Dan got some good licks in the “Title 9” category, as well as the $1,000 clue in “Art and Artists.”
Dan finished in the lead with $7,200 (the exact same amount he had at the end of yesterday’s first round). Vinayak was second with $5,000 and Katy was last with $2,200.
In Double Jeopardy, Dan swept through the “DeNiro Code” category and had a stupendous lead of $14,800. (Alex, your DeNiro impression is terrible). Dan even knew that Juba was the capital of South Sudan! (We didn’t even know South Sudan was an independent country!) By the time he found the first Daily Double in “Mesopotamia,” He had $20,000, a $14,200 lead over Vinayak. Dan bet $3,000. He was RIGHT again.
“Transcribed in the 1800s, the Behistun Inscription is the Rosetta Stone for this type of writing developed in Mesopotamia.” show
Vinayak managed to get the second to last clue and that meant the second Daily Double was the very last clue in “At the Cleveland Clinic.” He had $8,200 and chose to risk $5,000. He got out a guess with “stent” but that was WRONG.
Robin Williams thanked the Cleveland Clinic team for his heart surgery, saying after getting a replacement one of these from a cow, the grazing’s been fun. show
That left Vinayak in last place with $3,200. Katy had $5,200 and Dan was untouchable with an incredible $25,800.
Unsurprisingly, NONE of the contestants got the Final Jeopardy question right. Like, how random was that one?
“Keith Downey, known as the ‘Father of Canola,’ is a plant breeder who was largely responsible for transforming rapeseed into canola. This crop, first grown on the Prairies during World War II for industrial oil, now is a major vegetable oil crop, rivalling Wheat as the leading money-maker for Saskatchewan farmers.” Encyclopedia of Saskatchewan”.
Vinayak wrote down “what is grapeseed.” He bet $2,601 leaving him with $599.
Close guess by Katy with “what is vegetable oil,” but it still cost her $2,600. She finished second with $3,200.
Dan also was on the right track with “what is cooking oil” but, like Katy, wasn’t specific enough. He lost $4,200, leaving him with today’s winning score: $21,600. His 4-day total is $62,001.
How does that stack up against recent champs who made it to 4 days? We’ll look it up: Dave Leach had $60,884 and Jason Keller had $94,800.
