Final Jeopardy: Mount Rushmore (9-30-13)

The Final Jeopardy question (9/30/2013) in the category “Mount Rushmore” was:

2 of the 4 men on Mt. Rushmore were born in Virginia; these 2 states were the birthplaces of the other 2 men.

New champ Sarah Zucker won $1,799 on Friday, having the most money left after an FJ that no one knew. Today she takes on these two players: Meredith Robinson, from Gales Ferry, CT; and Fidelito Cortes, from Port Jefferson Station, NY.

Sarah found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Fragrances.” She was in the lead with $6,400, $3,400 ahead of Meredith in second place. She bet $3,000 and she was RIGHT.

Sarah finished in the lead with $8,400. Fidelito was second with $4,200 and Meredith was last with $4,000.

Fidelito found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “19th Century Brit Lit.” He just took over the lead and had $8,600, $200 more than Sarah in second place. A writer and poet, Fidelito felt comfortable betting $4,400 and he was RIGHT.

Sarah found the last Daily Double in “U.S. City Name Origins.” In second place with $14,000, she was $7,400 behind Fidelito’s lead. Sarah bet $7,000, half of what she had, and took a guess with “Topeka.” That was WRONG.

Once called Buffalo City, this Wild West Kansas town was named for the commander of the nearby fort.  show

Fidelito finished in the lead with $21,400, now a runaway. Sarah was next with $7,000 and Meredith was in third place with $4,800.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT ARE KENTUCKY (LINCOLN) AND NEW YORK (TEDDY ROOSEVELT)?

Well, we thought they were kidding with this one — it is sort of the reverse of the Final Jeopardy! question from one of the 2013 Teen Tournament matches, a recent rerun too. But, okay, maybe they thought the adults would be confused about one birthplace or another. Apparently, they were.

Meredith started out with Ohio, crossed that out and put in the right two states. She added $3,000 to finish with $7,800.

Sarah wrote “Kentucky and Ohio.” She lost $2,601 and ended up with $4,399.

Fidelito had “New York and Illinois.” He only bet $1,400 and won the game with $20,000. So Fidelito Cortes is our second new champ in a row, and he will return tomorrow.

Sarah foolishly threw away her chance to win with that big bet on the last DD. Of course, there is no way to tell what Fidelito would have bet if she only lost, say, $1,000, but she still would have had a shot.

I was hoping Sarah Zucker would win just because she is one of prettiest contestants ever. Seems like a very nice person too. The Mt. Rushmore question was a great one. Sarah almost got it right. All the best with your winnings!
