Final Jeopardy: European Capitals (9-27-13)

The Final Jeopardy question (9/27/2013) in the category “European Capitals” was:

Since a national split in 1993, it’s the only world capital that borders two other countries: Austria and Hungary.

3-day champ Neal Pollack has amassed winnings of $60,798. Neal has had some great luck in surging to the finish line in the second round. These two new players want some great luck too: Andrew Mugica, from Libertyville, IL; and Sarah Zucker, from Los Angeles, CA.

Neal found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “The Good.” He was in the lead with $6,000, $3,800 ahead of Andrew in second place. He bet $3,000 and took a guess with the good Red Cross. We think he got hung up on the word “good” because it was in the prior clue’s answer (Good King Wenceslaus), but the first clue’s answer didn’t have “good” in it (Mother Teresa). In any event, his reply was WRONG.

Neal finished in the lead with $6,200. Andrew was second with $3,600 and Sarah was last with $3,000.

Sarah found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “Iconic Pentameter” where they wanted the Shakespeare play. She was in third place with $4,200, $1,600 behind Neal’s lead. She bet $1,500 and she was RIGHT.

Sarah found the last Daily Double in “The Bear Essentials.” In second place with $12,500, she was only $100 behind Neal’s lead. Having lost the lead on a prior clue in the same category, gunshy Sarah only bet $1,000. Turned out the answer was the same one she lost on before and she was RIGHT this time!

Sarah finished in the lead with $13,500. Neal was next with $12,600 and Andrew was in third place with $9,200.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS BRATISLAVA (SLOVAKIA)?

Centuries ago, Bratislava was in Hungary and was at one point, that country’s capital, then it was in Austria. In 1918, it became part of Czechoslovakia and during WW2 was the capital of the puppet fascist Slovak State directed by Germany. In 1968, it became the official capital of the Slovak Socialist Republic. On New Year’s Day in 1993, Slovakia became an independent state with Bratislava as its capital. (Bratislava History)

Andrew thought it was Sarajevo. He lost everything and finished with zero.

Neal thought it was Prague. He bet everything but a buck so he finished with $1.00.

Sarah wrote down Kiev. She lost $11,701 and finished with $1,799. But that $1,799 was the winning total, and Sarah will be back on Monday as the new Jeopardy! champ.

My cable was disrupted by a yard worker on Friday just before Final Jeopardy and I have been trying to see the answer and question all weekend! As it turns out, I knew the answer and have actually been to Bratislava. I was there in the spring of 1991 before the split.

boy, that would have been something for me. i lived 30 miles from there for 30 years (in vienna, austria) when it was still part of czechoslovakia, prague being the capital.
german name for bratislava is “pressburg”
vienna and bratislava are both growing, so in about 20 years they will form one metropolitan area. because of the e.u. there are no borders per se, you would just cross the street and be in another “country”. unless by then it’s the “united states of europe” and slovakia, austria etc will not be countries anymore but states….(as ca,tx,fl etc are in the usa)
