Final Jeopardy: French Geography (9-20-13)

The Final Jeopardy question (9/20/2013) in the category “French Geography” was:

8 countries border mainland France; its smallest border at 2.7 miles is with this country.

6-day champ Jared Hall is going for another win today. With $181,001 in winnings, he surpassed Ben Ingram’s record yesterday. Today he takes on: Matt Volk, from Cedar Rapids, IA; and Kellie Chan, from Chuluota, FL.

Will it be Jared’s last game this week or his last game? Let’s find out.

Jared found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Bestsellers.” He was in the lead with $6,800, $1,200 more than Matt in second place. He bet $3,000 and guessed Grisham, who is 40 years younger than the right author so that was WRONG.

At age 97 in 2012, quite a few years after his bestseller “The Caine Mutiny”, he came out with “The Lawgiver.” show

Matt finished in the lead with $5,600. Jared was second with $3,800 and Kellie was last with $800.

Matt found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “San Antonio.” He had a runaway lead with $17,200, $15,400 more than Jared, in second place after suffering a series of incorrect answers. He bet $1,000 and he was RIGHT.

The city thrived as the starting point for this trail, named for a trader, that sent cattle up to Abilene, Kansas. show

Kellie found the last Daily Double in “Find Your ‘Voice’.” She was in second place with $2,400, $17,800 behind Matt’s lead. She bet $2,000, and she was RIGHT.

Since the 1940s, it’s been bringing Uncle Sam’s point of view to radio listeners worldwide. show

Matt finished in the lead with $20,200. Kellie was next with $4,400 and Jared was in third place with $2,200.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS MONACO?

France shares borders with Spain, Andorra, Monaco, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Luxembourg, and Belgium. About.com has the lengths of those borders (in kilometers).

Jared wrote down “Lichtenstein.” He bet it all and lost it all. (Liechtenstein is bordered by Austria and Switzerland.)

Kellie picked Andorra but didn’t bet anything so she remained at $4,400.

Matt had Andorra too, so he lost his bet $4,800 bet. But we have a new Jeopardy! champ because Matt still had the game in the bag with $15,400.

Well, Jared had a great run. Perhaps he will share his betting strategy that his girlfriend helped him with before he goes home, though it didn’t seem that hard to figure out — capitalize on the Daily Doubles when you get ’em if you’re comfortable in the category. Our advice to Jeopardy! champs would be: don’t even talk about it with Alex Trebek — you’ll be jinxed!!
