Final Jeopardy: Nobel Prize-Winning Scientists (7-9-12)

The Final Jeopardy question (7/9/2012) in the category “Nobel Prize-Winning Scientists” was:

1910 winner Albrecht Kossel studied a new material in the control center of cells; today, we know it as this.

Two-day champ Stephanie Fontaine is back. She’s won $35,100 up to now. Today she’s up against these two new challengers: Kelly Regan, from Philadelphia, PA and  Christy Gibson, from Issaquah, WA.

Stephanie found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Vice Presidents.” She was tied for second place with Christy at $800. They had $1,400 less than Kelly. Stephanie made it a true Daily Double but she was drawing a blank. At Alex’ urging to say something, she guessed “Truman” and that was WRONG.

He was the last Democratic Vice President to become President.

Kelly finished in the lead with $4,400. Christy was second with $800 and Stephanie was $200 in the red.

Stephanie found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “Musical Instruments.” She was out of the hole but only had $600. She could have gone as high as $2,000 but only bet what she had and she was RIGHT.

Appropriately, the song “Back in the U.S.S.R.” mentions this Russian instrument.

Stephanie found the last Daily Double in “Life of Pi.” She was now in the lead with $9,200, $1,600 more than Kelly in second place. She bet $1,200, answered “Pythagoras” so she was WRONG.

Eureka! Around 250 B.C., this sage of Syracuse estimated Pi at around 22/7.

Stephanie finished in the lead with $14,400. Kelly was next with $8,800. Christy could not participate in Final Jeopardy! because she ended up in the hole to the tune of $6,400.

Only ONE contestant got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS DNA?

Albrecht Kossel identified DNA as a nucleic acid in 1881 and provided its present chemical name. Kossel’s work would be rewarded in 1910 as the recipient of the first Nobel Prize (Physiology or Medicine) for research on DNA.

Kelly wrote down nuclear physics. She lost $7,000 and finished with $1,800.

Stephanie got it right. Her $5,000 bet brought her up to $19,400 today and a 3-day total of $54,400. Pretty cool way to start the week, even if it was a rough start!
