Final Jeopardy: Classical Musicians (7-26-13)

The Final Jeopardy question (7/26/2013) in the category “Classical Musicians” was:

The cover of the May 19, 1958 Time Magazine called him “The Texan Who Conquered Russia.”

New champ Jared Hall won $31,200 in yesterday’s game. Today he is up against these two players: Leigh Hoopes from Crescent Springs, KY; and Bruce Richards from Metairie, LA.

Jared found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Countries by Airport” before the first break. He was in second place with $400, $200 behind Leigh’s lead. He bet $1,000 and he was RIGHT.

Jared finished in the lead with $9,200. Bruce was second with $4,800 and Leigh was last with $2,200.

Leigh found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “Fashion.” She was in third place with $5,800, $5,000 behind Jared’s lead. She bet $3,000 and she was RIGHT.

This fashion weekly began publishing in 1867: it got the double “A” in 1929. show

Leigh found the last Daily Double in “Japanese History.” She was now in the lead with $16,000, $1,600 ahead of Jared in second place. She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.

In 1914, Japan joined the Allies & quickly seized this European power’s islands in the Pacific. show

Leigh finished in the lead with $19,200. Jared was next with $18,400 and Bruce was in third place with $4,800.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS VAN CLIBURN?

Harvey Lavan “Van” Cliburn, Jr., who passed away this year on February 27, 2013, achieved worldwide recognition in 1958 at the age of 23, when he won the first quadrennial International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow at the height of the Cold War. See the Time Magazine cover here.

Bruce got it right. He bet $4,799 and finished with $9,599.

Jared also got it. He bet $10,000 and finished with $28,400.

Leigh drew a blank but only bet $800 so she ended up in second place with $18,400.

So it was a valiant try by Leigh but Jared prevails again. His 2-day total is now $59,600, knocking one person off the Top 12 TOC list.

Hilarious triple stumper in “Quoted in Bartlett’s:” “Oh my God, they killed Kenny!” Leigh said “Stan and Kyle”; Bruce said “Stan and Cartman”; and Jared continued the character trend with “Kyle and Cartman,” but they were after the voices — Trey Parker and Matt Stone. All of the characters named have said the line, so really,  was this fair? It cost each contestant $1,600, but didn’t affect the outcome in any event.
