Final Jeopardy: Anthropology (7-19-12)

The Final Jeopardy question (7/19/2012) in the category “Anthropology” was:

The most famous resident of the National Museum of Ethiopia is the very old young lady named this.

Julie Bratvold Ghanbari played such a good game yesterday, she won $18,001 and is the new champ. Her competition today is: Shelly Green, from Woodmere, NY and Mike McStravick, from Houston, TX.

Mike found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Money Talks.” He was in the lead with $2,800, $2,200 more than Shelly in second place. He bet $1,200 and he was RIGHT.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS LUCY?

Lucy was found by Donald Johanson and Tom Gray on November 24, 1974, at Hadar in Ethiopia. Johanson spotted her forearm bone by chance during a surveying trip in the area. After two weeks of careful excavation, 40 percent of a single hominid skeleton had been discovered. (“Hominid” basically means a being in the ape/human family that walks upright.) She was identified as female based mainly on her size and other contextual evidence at Hadar, and has been classified in the species Australopithecus afarensis.

Shelly got it and bet $3,500 and finished with $10,500.

Mike got it, too, bet it all and finished with $20,800.

Julie wrote down “Sheba” and lost $6,401, so she finished in last place with $7,999.

We thought they would all know this one, since Lucy was in the news a few years ago big time, on a U.S. Tour. “Lucy’s Legacy” spent a year at the Houston Museum of Natural Science before going to NYC. As for Sheba, Archaeologists say they are increasingly finding evidence that she really existed.

So Mike is the new champ. We’ve had a new champ every day this week. Maybe Mike will break that trend tomorrow.

A random observation: We love a game where each contestant gets a Daily Double and each one gets it right. We’d still love to know how Julie managed to pick Russia for the Don River. There’s also a Don River in Ontario, but it’s a lot shorter than the Russian one.
